Israel: Jewish Man 'Attacks Jewish Woman With An Axe After Mistaking Her For a Christian'

A 50-year-old woman was attacked in her home in the Old City of Jerusalem this evening (Wednesday) by a man armed with an axe, was moderately injured and was taken to Shaare Zedek Hospital in the city. The attacker did not harm the woman's five daughters who were in the house, he shouted in Hebrew "She is a Christian" as he left the apartment and fled. The background to the incident is unclear.

Amitai Lipshitz, a neighbor of the woman who lives in the apartment above her, told Here News: "I heard terrible screams from the apartment below and when we went out to see what was happening, we saw a man leaving the place shouting 'She's a Christian.'"

Amitai added that the attacker did not harm him and his mother, even though he could have: "He left the axe thrown and left the scene. I don't think it was a terrorist attack, because he could have harmed us and didn't. I don't know who the suspect is. The woman's five daughters were with her, but the attacker didn't harm them."

MDA paramedic Yossi Kasuto, who is also a neighbor of the woman who was attacked, was rushed to the scene: "I quickly arrived at the scene and saw a woman fully conscious, she was lying with injuries to her upper body. I gave her life-saving medical treatment and we transferred her to the special MDA tractor that evacuated her in the alleys while treating her to an intensive care vehicle that was waiting at Shaar Zion, and from there we evacuated her while continuing medical treatment to the hospital in moderate and stable condition."
