49-year-old veteran Richland County, South Carolina sheriff's deputy Paul Derrick was filmed violently torturing a woman he handcuffed after having an argument with at a bar. The deputy is seen twisting 23-year-old female soldier Brittany Ball's arms behind her back as she screams out in pain begging him to stop, the whole time Derrick is shouting at her to "stand up" while calling her "soldier" as though he some sort of drill sergeant teaching her a lesson. When another police officer arrived at the scene, a good Samaritan who filmed the incident showed the officer the video, and he immediately arrested the drunk deputy and released Ball without charges. Deputy Paul Derrick was suspended without pay, though he's yet to face any charges. The sheriff's department initially defended his actions insisting he had the "authority" the make such an arrest, "however," they noted, "violations of proper procedures may have occurred." They said reports he was making an advance at Ball were incorrect, he was instead trying to "calm" her because she was emotionally distraught.
