DEVELOPMENT-AFRICA: Water, Water Everywhere...
Inter Press ServiceAug 24
The crisis-weary African continent, which has two of the world's longest rivers -- the 6,400-kilometre Nile River and the 4,370-kilometre Congo River -- is suffering from a virtual economic paradox: a shortage of water amidst potentially plentiful supplies.

"In spite of a few large rivers like the Congo and the Nile, 21 of the world's most arid countries, in terms of water per person, are located in Africa," South Africa's Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry told a symposium ma

Still Dying in Darfur
The NationAug 24
Here's a sad little secret: Every time I write about Darfur in this space, traffic drops by at least a third. So here goes nothing.

A few months ago I asked a veteran news producer why television had devoted so little attention to such a significant humanitarian crisis. The producer cited budget constraints and added, "Plus, the villages aren't burning anymore." When they were burning, as Nick Kristof has so poignantly documented, the media hardly cared. NBC spent 5 minutes on Dar

Painkillers can cause fatal stomach bleeding
Reuters HealthAug 24
Approximately one third of all hospitalizations and deaths related to gastrointestinal bleeding can be attributed to the use of aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) painkillers like ibuprofen, a study in Spain suggests.

Moreover, up to one third of these painkiller-related incidents may be due to low-dose aspirin.

Dr. Angel Lanas, at University Hospital in Zaragoza, and his associates evaluated data from 26 Spanish hospitals on hospitalizations

Editor and PublisherAug 24
The American Legion, which has 2.7 million members, has declared war on antiwar protestors, and the media could be next. Speaking at its national convention in Honolulu, the group's national commander called for an end to all “public protests” and “media events” against the war, even though they are protected by the Bill of Rights.

"The American Legion will stand against anyone and any group that would demoralize our troops, or worse, endanger their lives b

Smokers need not apply
AftenpostenAug 24
A classified ad from automobile firm Toyota in Asker and Bærum specifying that smokers will not be employed has sparked controversy.

"This is lifestyle fascism. You have to ask, what next? Will it be the fat, the ugly, those with heart trouble or smelly feet?" said social medicine professor Per Fugelli.

A full-page ad in local newspaper Budstikka made it clear that smokers were unwanted at the Toyota offices in the Oslo suburb.

"People must be a

Is India's outsourcing honeymoon over?
CNN/MoneyAug 24
Surprise! India's reign as the world's "Outsourcing King" may be slipping, even with its rock-bottom call center costs.

A new report from market research firm Gartner, Inc. warns that a labor crunch and rising wages could erode as much as 45 percent of India's market share by 2007.

Indian industry watchers acknowledge that the country's outsourcing industry -- its golden goose of the moment -- is indeed facing a "serious" problem.

BloombergAug 24
Crude oil rose to a record $67.40 a barrel in New York and natural gas reached $10 for the first time in 30 months on concern that a storm heading for Florida may threaten production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Tropical Storm Katrina, the 11th named storm of the year, is forecast to reach hurricane strength before crossing Florida August 26 and moving into the Gulf, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said. The Gulf of Mexico accounts for 24 percent of U.S. gas producti

Freak weather batters Europe
TimesAug 24
Extreme weather is afflicting Europe, with swaths of Portugal and Spain ablaze in the drought while Austria and Switzerland suffer floods after torrential rain.

Temperatures of 43C coupled with strong winds during the worst drought on record have fanned the flames of the forest fires which have been raging out of control across Portugal for several weeks.

Pope Benedict XVI, a Bavarian, said in his weekly general audience in the Vatican that he felt spiritually close

U.S. to Send More Troops to Iraq
Washington PostAug 24
Anticipating an increase in insurgent attacks, the United States plans to send more troops to Iraq in advance of an Oct. 15 referendum on a new Iraqi constitution, which is considered unlikely to halt the country's violence, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said today.

In a Pentagon news conference, Rumsfeld dismissed the notion that the constitution, which was submitted to the Iraqi parliament late Monday but not immediately put to a vote, would trigger a civil war, as some p

Financial TimesAug 24
New orders for manufactured durable goods in July tumbled $10.6bn, or 4.9 per cent, to $204.7bn, the US Commerce Department said on Wednesday. The fall, which was sharply higher than expected, is the biggest since January 2004 as demand shrank for most manufactured goods.

July’s drop comes after two months of consecutive increases.

Economists had been expecting a fall in orders in July of about 1.2 per cent to 1.5 per cent. Orders rose by 1.9 per cent in June.

Europeans call off next round of nuclear talks with Tehran
International Herald TribuneAug 24
A two-year European initiative to discourage Iran from producing its own nuclear fuel appeared to have been put on ice Tuesday, when negotiators called off the next round of talks with Tehran.

The talks, which had been planned for Aug. 31, were supposed to focus on a European proposal that was submitted to the Iranian government this month.

But France, which along with Germany and Britain has spearheaded the talks with Tehran, said Iran's decision to resume nuclea

Chavez offers Americans cheap fuel
ajJazeeraAug 24
"We want to sell gasoline and heating fuel directly to poor communities in the United States," the populist leader said at the end of a visit to Communist-run Cuba on Tuesday.

Chavez did not say how Venezuela would go about providing petrol to poor communities.

Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA owns Citgo, which has 14,000 petrol stations in the United States.

The offer may sound attractive to Americans feeling pinched by soaring prices at the pump b

The Sin of Blasphemy
NewsweekAug 24
Pat Robertson considers himself a man of God, a Christian, a preacher of the Gospel. To all of these aspects of his self-delusion, the only appropriate response is: Huh? His latest suggestion, as this self-proclaimed man of God, is that Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela, should be assassinated. On his “700 Club” TV show, Robertson said Chavez could turn Venezuela into a safe haven for Communist and Muslim extremists. "You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination,... (more)

Wave of Marine Species Extinctions Feared
Washington PostAug 24
The bulldozers moved slowly at first. Picking up speed, they pressed forward into a patch of dense mangrove trees that buckled and splintered like twigs. As the machines moved on, the pieces drifted out to sea.

Sitting in a small motorboat a few hundred yards offshore on a mid-July afternoon, Samuel H. Gruber -- a University of Miami professor who has devoted more than two decades to studying the lemon sharks that breed here -- plunged into despondency. The mangroves being ripped

Venezuela angry over evangelist's assassination call
Financial TimesAug 24
Venezuela's government reacted angrily on Tuesday to calls by Pat Robertson, the US televangelist, for President Hugo Chávez to be assassinated.

José Vicente Rangel, vice-president, said that how US authorities responded would demonstrate their commitment to fighting terrorism. “It's deeply hypocritical to talk about fighting terrorism while at the same time, within that country, there are obvious terrorist statements,” he said.

Rave Promoters Threaten Lawsuit Against County
KSLAug 24
The Utah County Sheriff's Department is facing heavy criticism, even possible lawsuits over the way it broke up a party over the weekend.

Party organizers say they promoted a clean and safe event, while officers argue it was a venue for drugs and alcohol. Whatever you call it, there are lots of them happening and police say it’s out of control.

Apparently, the party these days is past Point of the Mountain.
