Gouging in the Name of Peak Oil
PESNAug 26
Oil companies posting huge profits, taking advantage of the perception of scarcity from Hubert's Peak theory that may actually be mostly hype, considering the known existence of renewable magma oil.

At a time when the price per barrel of oil is reaching record highs, why is it that the large oil companies are also posting near record profits?

Why aren't they using their proceeds to lower the price or address the shortfalls? Why are these companies allowed to get awa

Finding solace in $3-a-gallon gas
The Monitor's ViewAug 26
High gas prices are a doomsayer's delight. Trips to the mall are fewer, vacations shrink, heating bills rise, inflation rises, the economy slumps. Those harmful effects need to be addressed, but in the long term, such prices can actually serve consumers.

If oil prices manage to stay above $40 a barrel for years, which many experts now say is possible, then the alternatives to oil, from solar cells to liquefied coal, look very attractive to energy investors. (Current oil prices see

The OregonianAug 25
There is no military draft and federal officials say there are no plans to restart one, but if that changed suddenly, Oregon's system could spring to life quickly, board members say.

"There's a system in place, ready to go," said Mike Weatherby, the mayor of Fairview and a member of the statewide Selective Service appeals board. If a national draft was suddenly instituted, he said, "it would have some hiccups, some stumbling, but it would work."

While the U.S. milit
