U.S. backs away from claims that Cuba has bioweapons program
Knight Ridder NewspapersSep 01
The Bush administration backed away Tuesday from claims that Cuba has an offensive biological weapons effort, acknowledging in a report to Congress that "there is a split view" among intelligence analysts on the question.

The report says instead that Cuba has the "technical capability" to pursue biological weapons research and development because of its advanced pharmaceutical industry. But it leaves open the critical question of whether it has done so.

Condi Rice Continues to Shop Up a Storm
GawkerSep 01
The latest on Condoleezza Rice’s Manhattan vacation, courtesy of a reader:

"Secret service is all over Seventh Avenue. That fucking worthless bitch is shopping in showrooms right now."

Whoa, such language! And how could anyone just assume that our leaders have anything other than the best intentions? We actually have it on good authority that Condi’s snapping up the best of the Spring 2006 collections and sending the fripperies directly to the Red Cross.

Breaking: Condi Rice Spends Salary on Shoes
GawkerSep 01
According to Drudge, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has recently enjoyed a little Broadway entertainment. And Page Six reports that she’s also working on her backhand with Monica Seles. So the Gulf Coast has gone all Mad Max, women are being raped in the Superdome, and Rice is enjoying a brief vacation in New York. We wish we were surprised.

What does surprise us: Just moments ago at the Ferragamo on 5th Avenue, Condoleeza Rice was seen spending several thousands of dol

Who Opened the New Orleans Floodgates?: Media ignores fact that Bush administration cut funding for the very levies that broke
Prison PlanetSep 01
As the federal government takeover of New Orleans continues and the helpless masses beg the state for refuge and assurance, the media is ignoring the key fact that it was the federal government itself that lowered the guard in cutting off key funding to protect Louisiana from natural disasters.

The New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bore the brunt of a record $71.2 million reduction in federal funding for fiscal year 2006.

Crackdown on looting New Orleans police ordered to stop saving lives and start saving property
WSWSSep 01
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered nearly the entire active police force in the flood-ravaged city to abandon rescue operations Wednesday night and focus on efforts to halt looting. The decision came in response to mounting pressure from sensationalized media coverage which is increasingly placing emphasis on the property damage done by looters, suggesting that it has become nearly as significant a social problem as the virtual destruction of the city by Hurricane Katrina.

US remodels Guantanamo hearings
BBCSep 01
The military authorities in the United States have announced changes to the military commission that will try detainees at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The structure of the trials will now be similar to a traditional US court room, with a presiding officer effectively acting as a judge.

The accused will be present at the hearing, except when classified information is discussed.

But human rights organisations remained critical of the new tribunal set-up.... (more)

Detroit Free PressSep 01
A major American city all but disintegrated, as the expected death toll from Hurricane Katrina mushroomed into the thousands in New Orleans and the mayor ordered 1,500 police to abandon their search-and-rescue mission Wednesday night to put a stop to looting.

"They are starting to get closer to heavily populated areas -- hotels, hospitals, and we're going to stop it right now," Mayor Ray Nagin said in a statement after hundreds of looters roamed the city largely unchallenged durin

No one can say they didn't see it coming

In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war.

Biblical in its uncontrolled rage and scope, Hurricane Katrina has left millions of Americans to scavenge for food and shelter and hundreds to thousands reportedly dead. With its main levee broken, the evacuated city of New Orleans has become part of the Gulf of Mex

Release of oil reserves has little effect
Financial TimesSep 01
The US government on Wednesday agreed to lend refiners small quantities of oil from its strategic emergency stockpile to help ease the shortage of petrol caused by Hurricane Katrina.

But the relief it caused in the overheated oil market was cut short when it became clear that the move would have little impact on the problem and was as much a political gesture as an economic one.

In fact, helping the US deal with the loss of 20 per cent of its oil production and 10 p
