Bush will use 9.11.2007 to extend surge, Rich says
Raw StoryJun 26
The Bush administration has a well established pattern of using the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to hype an often fictional "threat to America" and sell the war in Iraq, writes the New York Times' Frank Rich in his Sunday column. Rich expects this year to be no different.

"When the September 'snapshot' of the surge shows little change in the overall picture, the White House will say that 'the consequences' of winding down the war would be even mo

Living Free Not an Option in Europe
Brussels JournalJun 26
The fourth "Die Hard" movie starring Bruce Willis is to be released in the U.S. next week, and one week later in Europe. We managed to collect the movie posters as they will be shown in the U.S. (left) and in Europe (right). Spot the differences.

Yes indeed, two different titles for the same movie! I guess the "live free" part of the title was considered to be too sensitive outside of North America? I know that "Live free or die" is the state motto of Ne

Bees dying of mysterious infection
Daily HeraldJun 26
The dead bees under Dennis VanEngelsdorp's microscope were like none he had ever seen before.

He had expected to see mites or amoebas, perennial pests of bees. Instead, he found internal organs swollen with debris and strangely blackened. The bees' intestinal tracts were scarred, and their rectums were abnormally full of what appeared to be partly digested pollen. Dark marks on the sting glands were telltale signs of infection.

46% - Support Public Library Book Banning
Pew Research CenterJun 22
Since 1999, support for the idea of banning "books with dangerous ideas" from public school libraries has declined from 55% to 46% and has now fallen to the lowest level of support of the past 20 years, in contrast with the modest increase observed in concerns about pornographic material in magazines and movies. But even in the early 1990s, as few as 48% had supported banning such books. While there are relatively modest partisan differences in opinions about banning dangerous books, there are d... (more)

London Review of BooksJun 22
On 21 December 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was 38 minutes into its journey when it was blown up at 31,000 feet. The explosion was so powerful that the nose of the aircraft was torn clean off. Within three seconds of the bomb detonating, the cockpit, fuselage and No. 3 engine were falling separately out of the sky. It happened so quickly that no distress call was sent out and no oxygen masks deployed. With the cockpit gone, the fuselage depressurised instantly and the passengers in the rear section o... (more)

It has nothing in common with democracy, which is the power of the majority in respect to the interests and opinions of the m
