Man facing 105 years in prison for shooting at would-be thief
Atlanta Journal-ConstitutionNov 14
David Sturdivant has lost his liberty, a kidney, his home, his business and all his belongings.

He has nothing left other than the $21 a friend put on his account at the Fulton County Jail, where he has been since April 8.

The 64-year-old Marine Purple Heart recipient could have left jail two weeks ago, but he refused to plead guilty to a misdemeanor, a deal that included 12 months probation with credit for the seven months served. The deal would have let Sturdiva

The Public's Distrust
Ralph ReilandNov 14
The good news is that Americans' distrust of government is at its highest level ever.

It's good news because it shows the public recognizes how poorly we're being governed. Not much good comes out of trusting people who shouldn't be trusted — not much good comes out of reelecting them, either.

Only 9 percent of Americans approve of the way Congress is handling its job, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. That's one point higher than the perce

Paul’s campaign reacted furiously to the Texan being limited to 90 seconds in what was a 90 minute-long debate, with Campaign Manager John Tate blasting out an emai

Guantánamo: The US Government's Most Expensive Cage
The Daily MailNov 12
The Pentagon detention centre at Guantanamo Bay has been declared the most expensive prison on Earth.

The Guantanamo Bay Prison, which opened on the U.S. naval base in Cuba in January 2002, costs U.S. taxpayers $800,000 per year per each of its 171 inmates, according to a new report.

That's more than even the most expensive four-year college degree in the U.S., and more than 30 times the cost of keeping captives on U.S. soil at $25,000 per inmate.

U.S. Tourism's 'Lost Decade' Cost Some 500,000 Jobs
US NewsNov 12
The travel industry today became the latest to slam federal rules and bureaucracy, charging that tough visa rules for potential tourists have robbed the nation of $600 billion and hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Two grim facts: More Chinese now visit France than the United States, in part because it's hard to get a U.S. visitors visa. And while the U.S. used to be the destination for 17 percent of the world's tourists in 2000, that's dropped to 12.4 percent and shows no sign of cha

The South China Sea may hold 213 billion barrels of oil, or 80 percent of Saudi Arabia's reserves, according to Chinese studies cited in 2008 by the U.S. Energy Information Agency. The world's second-largest economy claims "indisputable sovereignty" over most of the sea, i

Remember the "borderless" Internet? It's officially dead

"The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there," wrote L.P. Hartley in his terrific novel The Go-Between. But Hartley knew nothing of the Internet when he wrote his novel of adolescent sexual awakening; if he had, he might have been shocked at just how quickly the past became a foreign place. Indeed, from the perspective of the recently introduced Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which would set up US website blacklisting, require search engine censorship, and divide the Inte... (more)
