DALLAS - The man responsible for handling most of the drug tests in the Dallas County family courts system is the target of what aspires to be a class-action lawsuit.
Jim Turnage is accused by one former client of masquerading as an expert in drug test toxicology and mislabeling citizens as drug users.
"He's not who he says he is and the consequences are far-reaching and they are very painful," said the client, a recovering alcoholic who wants to remain anonymous.... (more)
Colombia's Constitutional Court has approved the government's proposal to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of drugs for personal use. The opinion (scroll down to item three, Expediente D-8842) issued last Sunday re-decriminalizes drug possession in Colombia, which had decriminalized by the courts in the 1990s, only to have possession recrim... This man attempted to steal $2.55 million through insurance fraud by burning his own house down and he faced 16-years in prison, yet the criminals in Washington can steal billions of dollars from taxpayers and give it to insurance companies like AIG and they go scott free. There is no reason non-violent criminals should be imprisoned.- Chris
If I didn’t know better, I’d have thought New York Times columnist David Brooks was having a laugh at our expense. Alas, Brooks means every word of his column titled “The Follower Problem,” as anyone who reads him regularly will realize.
“I don’t know if America has a leadership problem; it certainly has a followership problem... (more)
Contrary to outraged cries from Republicans that it’s some sort of radical departure from our “free enterprise” system, Obamacare is in fact a direct continuation of the bipartisan neoliberal consensus of the past thirty years. The guiding principle of this consensus is the use of state power to protect corporate profits — which consist mostly of rents on artificial scarcity — from the radical deflationary effects of technologies of abundance. In the spirit of the o... (more)

"I strongly disagree with today's decision by the Supreme Court, but I am not surprised. The Court has a dismal record when it comes to protecting liberty against unconstitutional excesses by Congress.
"Today we should remember that virtually everything government does is a 'mandate.' The issue is not whether Congress can compel commerce by forcing you to buy insurance, or simply compel you to pay a tax if you don't. The issue is that this compulsion implies the use of... (more)

Michael Eversden pointed this out to me, so I read that portion of the decision, and it's true: The Supreme Court says that the fine is not a tax for one purpose (getting the case to be considered despite the Anti-Injunction Act) and is a tax for another purpose (the Constitution). The relevant portion of a paragraph reads:
"The Affordable Care Act describes the payment as a 'penalty,' not a 't... (more)
SCOTUS voted 5--4 to uphold Obamacare and have concluded that the Constitution actually empowers the government to force people to buy things. In this case, it's health insurance, but now that the precedent is set, the feds can now require you to buy anything it wants, apparently justified by the Constitution's granted power to tax.
This nicely illustrates the theory that SCOTUS judges will almost always come down on the side of more government power unless doing so will dangerous... (more)

A cop in Houston arrested a woman for holding up a tiny sign warning drivers of a speed trap. The cop allegedly searched the woman without her consent, accused her of "obstructing justice," threatened her with 3 to 5 years in jail, then made up a lie she was standing in the street and "was a danger to herself and others," a claim which the woman vehemently denies.
Via KTRK Houston:
A woman tried to save drivers from getting ticketed by police and instead en

As most every American knows, we now live in a country in which the ruler possesses the unfettered power to assassinate his citizens. What an extraordinary situation. Who would have ever thought that America would end up with a governmental system in which the ruler possessed such omnipotent power?
Equally extraordinary, our ruler just happens to possess a powerful military and intelligence force (the CIA) to exercise such power whenever he wants. In fact, it’s the most po... (more)

It was a street battle pitting the champions of civility against those decrying censorship. It was not a fight for those with delicate ears.
