Gallup Poll Suggests Trump Has Squandered Historic Mandate for Mass Deportations

President Trump has squandered his mandate for mass deportations with his focus on rounding up critics of Israel and staging show-of-force stunts to hide the fact deportations are lacking, if a new Gallup poll is to be believed.

From Gallup, "Surge in U.S. Concern About Immigration Has Abated":
Americans have grown markedly more positive toward immigration over the past year, with the share wanting immigration reduced dropping from 55% in 2024 to 30% today. At the same time, a record-high 79% of U.S. adults say immigration is a good thing for the country.

[...] After climbing to 55% in 2024, the percentage of Americans who say immigration should be reduced has dropped by nearly half to 30%. Sentiment is thus back to the level measured in 2021, before the desire for less immigration started to mount. Meanwhile, 38% now want immigration kept at its current level, and 26% say it should be increased.

With illegal immigration levels down dramatically and refugee programs suspended, the desire for less immigration has fallen among all party groups, but it is most pronounced among Republicans, down 40 percentage points over the past year to 48%. Among independents, this sentiment is down 21 points to 30%, and among Democrats, down 12 points to 16%.
[...] In terms of impeding illegal immigration at the source, support for increasing the number of Border Patrol agents has declined 17 points to 59%, from 76% a year ago. And backing for expanding the U.S.-Mexico border wall has dropped eight points to 45%. This likely reflects people perceiving these measures as less necessary given the sharp drop in illegal border crossings.

Yet, support is also lower today for deporting all undocumented immigrants, with 38% now favoring this as the administration is attempting it, down from 47% last year when it was a Trump campaign promise. However, it should be noted that last year’s support for deportation was uniquely high. Today’s level matches where it stood in 2019 (at 37%) and is slightly higher than when first measured in 2016 (32%).

[...] Meanwhile, support for allowing undocumented immigrants to become U.S. citizens has risen to 78%, up from 70% last year. This is also back to the level of support seen in 2019 (81%) while slightly lower than in 2016 (84%). Approval is higher still, albeit statistically unchanged, for offering individuals brought to the U.S. illegally as children a pathway to citizenship, with support holding above 80%.
What went wrong?

First off, the Trump administration's decision to focus on mass deporting critics of Israel was a complete disaster, starting with the insanely viral disturbing arrest of foreign Tuft's student Runeysa Ozturk.

As I reported Wednesday, it came out in court that the Trump administration used the shadowy Israeli doxing outfit "Canary Mission" to compile a list of critics of Israel for deportation.

Stephen Miller said recently this is our "one chance to reverse decades of illicit mass migration" but he's been spending his time working with ICE to target critics of Israel rather than focusing on deporting the 30 million illegal aliens brought in under Biden and previous administrations.

Putting the clownish "ICE Barbie" Kristi Noem in charge of Homeland Security was another obvious mistake.

The Trump administration's focus on show-of-force stunts, "Alligator Alcatraz" and sending illegals to El Salvador's harsh prisons may have been entertaining for his base and may have done some to discourage immigrants from coming but likely didn't help in the polls.

That said, worst of all may be Trump's own lack of a commitment to actual mass deportations. Right off the bat he said he would only deport illegal alien "criminals" -- as though being here illegally isn't a crime in itself -- either because he didn't want to hurt the economy or because he simply doesn't actually want mass deportations.

As we saw last week, Trump is now out pushing for a mass amnesty for illegal aliens in the farm, hotel and leisure industries. Trump hired illegals to work at his hotels and also took advantage of a host of foreign guest worker programs.

Is it too cynical to assume Trump threw the fight on purpose because he actually supports amnesty?

NBC News reported Thursday that Trump's deportation numbers are still lagging behind some of the numbers achieved during the Obama administration (with zero fanfare and no dramatics, mind you).

If this is our last chance, then Trump is blowing it.
