Twitter/X owner Elon Musk on Monday said he would not ban the ADL "unless they break the law" but it "looks like" he'll have "no choice but to file a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League" seeking "roughly $22 billion" in damages due to their advertiser boycotts. "Despite the immense harm ADL has done to X/Twitter, they still will not be banned in this platform, unless they break the law," Musk said in response to Disturbed frontman David Draiman asking if he would ban the ADL despite the lobbying group allegedly doing "a world of good."
"The ADL clearly violated X terms of service by using the platform to try and destroy its financial viability," Keith Woods, who has spearheaded the #BanTheADL campaign, responded. "Put it to a poll and let's see what X users think. Vox Populi, Vox Dei."
"ADL has pushed hard for us to shut down accounts like [LibsOfTikTok founder Chaya Raichik's], even though it has nothing to do with anti-Semitism, which is their supposed charter!" Musk revealed in another tweet.
"To clear our platform's name on the matter of anti-Semitism, it looks like we have no choice but to file a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League … oh the irony!" Musk announced on Monday evening.
"In our case, [the ADL] would potentially be on the hook for destroying half the value of the company, so roughly $22 billion," he said.
"Based on what we've heard from advertisers, ADL seems to be responsible for most of our revenue loss," Musk revealed. "Giving them maximum benefit of the doubt, I don't see any scenario where they're responsible for less than 10% of the value destruction, so ~$4 billion. Document discovery of all communications between The ADL and advertisers will tell the full story."
For now, Musk said he's considering a "giant data dump" of the ADL's behind the scenes pressure campaigns to "clear the air."
"Might take until next week, as we're short-staffed this week," he said.
Musk revealed how the ADL's pressure campaigns work in a post later on Monday evening. "Advertisers avoid controversy, so all that is needed for ADL to crush our US & European ad revenue is to make unfounded accusations. They have much less power in Asia, so our ad revenue there is still strong," Musk said. "This 'controversy' causes advertisers to 'pause', but that pause is permanent until ADL gives the green light, which they will not do without us agreeing to secretly suspend or shadowban any account they don't like," he continued. "That is the relationship they've had with X/Twitter for many years. Presumably, they have that with all western search or social media orgs."
