TN High School Students Thrown In Jail Over Saggy Pants

Two Tennessee high school students experienced the wonders of the police state after spending a weekend in jail for wearing saggy pants.

According to the Bolivar Central High School dress code, "pants must be worn and fitted at the waist line," and "low slung, baggy seat, baggy legged, or bell bottom pants are not permitted."

The two teens were sentenced to 48 hours in the Hardeman County Jail for wearing saggy pants after being charged with indecent exposure in early November.

Court documents say the school's resource officer had already reprimanded the students several times for wearing saggy pants.

Police and school officials wouldn't say how breaking school policy ended up as a court case with the teens being processed into the criminal justice system.

School policy does not mention jail time for violations of the dress code and some local residents are outraged at the news the two seniors were incarcerated.

"You do got to be presentable at school," one man said. "But, doing 48 hours! Ain't nobody doing that."

"Maybe we have them do some community service," a woman suggested. "Pick up some trash, help at the dog kennels, things like that. I think putting them in jail is just a little bit much."

Others were more sympathetic to the schools actions.

"The environment is already bad," resident Willie Hoyle said. "And it ain't going to get no better if the older kids don't try to show the younger kids anything."
