![]() U.S. District Court Judge John A. Jarvey showed Des Moines police officer Mersed Dautovic extraordinary leniency when he sentenced him to only serve 20 months in prison after he was convicted of using excessive force for breaking a man's skull during a routine traffic stop. The sentence was so outrageously disproportionate to the crime one year ago a panel of three judges demanded the officer be resentenced, citing the officer's total lack of remorse, lying in court, and his filing of a false police report. Dautovic's resentencing was scheduled to happen today, prosecutors were going to recommend an 11 to 14-year sentence for his crime, but now that will never happen, because he reportedly killed his girlfriend and himself in a murder-suicide just yesterday. Had Dautovic actually gotten a real sentence the first go-around, he would have still been in prison and this incident couldn't have occurred. |
