PM still favours 90-day detention

Prime Minister Tony Blair has said he still supported police calls for terror suspects to be held without trial for up to 90 days.

At Thursday's meeting of the Cabinet Mr Blair told ministers that he still believed that the police argument for extending the time suspects could be held remained "compelling".

He acknowledged however that the Government faced a tough battle in getting its Terrorism Bill through Parliament.

On Wednesday night Home Secretary Charles Clarke promised all-party talks on the bill in order to stave off a certain defeat on the 90-day proposal.

According to the Prime Minister's official spokesman, Mr Blair told the Cabinet: "Times are tough but they are tough because the Government is trying to do the right thing."
