![]() The Catholic Church in Dublin has paid out 7.8 million euros (10.6 million dollars) to settle claims of sexual abuse by priests, Irish press reports said Wednesday. Eight Dublin priests have been convicted of child sexual abuse and three more are currently facing charges, the Irish Examiner reported. The number of allegations against priests jumped from 102 in 2006 to 147 in 2007. Civil cases have been brought 112 times against 32 priests in the Irish capital, and 40 of the cases are still ongoing. Some 380 people have complained or are suspected of having suffered child abuse, the report said. "It is more likely that this is not the final figure," a church spokesperson was quoted as saying. |
