Right on Time: 'Letter bomb' explodes at C-charge HQ in London

A suspected letter bomb exploded in the offices of the congestion charge firm Capita this morning.

A woman employee was taken to hospital after the device exploded in the post room of the company's Victoria offices.

Bomb disposal experts were on the scene this morning and a section of Victoria Street was closed off.

Witnesses described hearing a small explosion in the post room.

Scotland Yard said a safety cordon had been thrown around the building in Victoria Street, just metres from the Yard. A Met spokesman said: "As a precaution, a cordon has been put in place around the scene. Bomb disposal officers are attending the scene.

"It is too early to say what has happened, but one female employee has been taken to hospital.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: "We are attending reports of a suspect package in a building in Victoria Street. I don't know if there has been an explosion or not. We're waiting for an update now."

Police and ambulance were attending and described the situation as an "ongoing incident".

Capita manages the London congestion charge as well as collecting revenue from TV licensing and other tasks.

The office was located above a row of shops and cafes, including a sandwich store and shoe repair business.
