THE Delhi traffic police and the transport department are planning to equip Delhi’s vehicles with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Vehicle tracking system. RFID is popularly used the world over for real time data processing on vehicle movement in cities and also to track traffic offenders.

The transport department held a meeting with the traffic police last month in this regard and the latter is working out the details of the project with the transport department’s IT branch.

Almost half the vehicles involved in fatal accidents in the Capital cannot be traced. This situation is likely to change soon, say officials.

‘‘In the RFID system, vehicles will be equipped with RFID tags which emit unique signals that can be read by readers installed at traffic signals or traffic checkpoints. These readers will be able to access data regarding the ownership, registration date and location of the vehicle, and pass it on to the Control Centre,’’ said a senior traffic police official.

The transport department will be providing hand-held RFID readers to the traffic police to be able to access all vehicle related information on the spot.

‘‘This technology will help streamline operation of public buses and check violations like not plying on bus lanes, not stopping at bus stops, overspending etc. This will also help track down vehicles involved in crimes or offences. The transport department proposed RFID tags first on buses. They have also discussed the issue with us,’’ said the official.
