Ninety-thousand knives were handed to police during a five-week national amnesty that ended last month.

The Government said that police in England and Wales also received an anti-armour rocket launcher — handed in to the Devon and Cornwall force — cut-throat razors, samurai swords, meat cleavers and a bayonet. Vernon Coaker, a Home Office minister, said: “I am delighted so many knives have been taken out of circulation. I believe that fewer knives on our streets make us all more secure.”

The Home Office said that it would give £500,000 to forces to tackle the knife problem through school education programmes and special police operations.
