 The school system has joined the world of digital surveillance cameras. Each elementary school is now equipped with the new technology and can accommodate up to eight cameras, a representative from IBT Video Systems of Schererville told the School Board recently. Cameras will soon be added at the middle and high school. The cameras can be set to monitor any area deemed critical by each individual school, including the playgrounds. Unlike the old black and white analog cameras, the new digital ones use color and make recordings for future playback. Each system is capable of recording up to 30 days worth of activity. The plan is to integrate the school surveillance system with the Police Department to include the station and all of the squad cars. The board also approved a new two-year teachers contract. The agreement features a 1.8 percent salary boost for this year and next, Superintendent Peter Morikis said.
