A Dictator Dies, Will The Regime Live On?
Anthony GregoryDec 20
Kim Jong-il, the ruler of perhaps the most totalitarian dictatorship in the world, is dead. In watching the footage of North Korean citizens weeping hysterically, as if their own children had died, we can see the great wickedness at the heart of hyper-statism. Communism, fascism, and the total state represent a form of worship, and probably the worst kind. The fact that people could be so brainwashed so as to feel ... (more)

A win-win on drugs? Fighting gangs by legalizing pot
GlobalPostDec 02
MALMO, Sweden — Copenhagen just got a lot closer to legalizing the sale of pot.

If approved by the Danish parliament, next year the city could grant licenses to individual marijuana growers. City-owned shops would then sell their crop to the public.

That prospect was deeply amusing to Israel, a burly dreadlocked Cuban in Christiania, the city’s self-declared “free town.”

"I will grow it!" he said with excessive zeal. "I’v

Swiss cannabis smokers to be allowed to grow four marijuana plants each
The Daily MailNov 18
Cannabis smokers in Switzerland will soon be allowed to grow up to four marijuana plants each at home to stop them buying drugs on the black market.

In a bizarre twist to the new law, four people sharing a house can grow up to 16 plants - but only if each person tends to their own crop.

The deregulation of Switzerland's already lax cannabis laws has been agreed by four neighbouring regions in the French-speaking part of the Alpine country.

U.S. Troop Withdrawal Motivated by Iraqi Insistence, Not U.S. Choice
National JournalOct 23
President Obama’s speech formally declaring that the last 43,000 U.S. troops will leave Iraq by the end of the year was designed to mask an unpleasant truth: The troops aren’t being withdrawn because the U.S. wants them out. They’re leaving because the Iraqi government refused to let them stay.

Obama campaigned on ending the war in Iraq but had instead spent the past few months trying to extend it. A 2008 security deal between Washington and Baghdad called for al

Left behind in Iraq: thousands of contractors
CNNOct 21
With the removal of all U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of the year looking more likely, absent an agreement to extend legal immunity, a large contingent of U.S. contractors will still remain facing their own legal and logistical ambiguities and challenges.

The complexity of the situation is not lost on top officials at the State Department who are busy preparing to assume control of every U.S. responsibility in Iraq – including contracting operations.

He spoke after conducting a video conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He said both governments agreed

Sounds like he's trying to get reelected. I find this very hard to believe considering the massive "permanent" U.S. military bases sprawled all over the country. Meanwhile, the Obama admin just announced they're building a massive new prison in Afghanistan. - Chris

Note also, this is not "as promised," Obama said he would bring the troops home as soon as he got into the White House proclaiming "you can take that to the bank." If you actually took it to the bank, your check would bounce.

BBCOct 13
Australia's lower house of parliament has narrowly passed a bill for a controversial carbon tax.

The legislation would force about 500 of the biggest polluters to pay for each tonne of carbon dioxide they emit.

The tax is central to the government's strategy to combat climate change, but the opposition says it will cause job losses and raise the cost of living.
