PRINCETON, NJ -- A record-low 26% of Americans favor a legal ban on the possession of handguns in the United States other than by police and other authorized people. When Gallup first asked Americans this question in 1959, 60% favored banning handguns. But since 1975, the majority of Americans have opposed such a measure, with opposition around 70% in recent years.
The results are based on Gallup's annual Crime poll, conducted Oct. 6... (more)
I do think there should be a law banning the use of guns -- but it should only apply to police! - Chris
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Just before firing Sean May the day after he was sent home for wearing an American flag pin, the Casa Monica Hotel answered some questions in an email Friday.
"The Casa Monica Hotel located in St. Augustine, Florida, is an American-based, homegrown historic hotel," the email reads. "The property reflects its pride in America and great patriotism by flying the Stars and Stripes high over the hotel. The American flag greets every guest and employee with its sy... (more)
Despite knowing he was dying, Steve Jobs worked for more than a year on the products that he believed would safeguard the company's future.
It was also revealed today that Jobs fought hard to get plans approved for a spaceship-style company headquarters in California.
It will be big enough to hold 12,000 employees in a park-like setting near the existing base in Cupertino. He appeared at a town council meeting in June to plead for the planning go ahead.

"When you're young, you look at television and think, There's a conspiracy. The networks have conspired to dumb us down. But when you get a little older, you realize that's not true. The networks are in business to give people exactly what they want. That's a far more depressing thought. Conspiracy is optimistic! You can shoot the bastards! We can have a revolution! But the networks are really in business to give people what they want. It's the truth." - Steve Jobs, Interview in WIRED maga... (more)
Steve Jobs, one of the most important entrepreneurs and innovators of both the 20th and 21st centuries, has died.
Will he receive the sort of veneration reserved to politicians when they die? That’s unlikely, although Steve Jobs typically did more good for humanity every day before lunch time than any politician has ever done in his whole life.
Jobs should be considered a great American icon in the same way that Michelangelo is associated with Italy or Mozar... (more)
How many cops have been busted thanks to Steve Job's iPhones?
A lot, that's for sure.
The iPhone is bringing down governments the world over. Even if governments do exploit it's technology to spy on people, people exploit it's technology to spy on the government.
I don't think I've ever once bought an Apple product, but people love them, he made computers hyper simple and introduced millions and millions of people to an incredible technology they otherwise probably never would have tried.
Steve Jobs just passed away, we learned tonight. He changed the world through his creativity and his will. Compared to his competitors, though, he didn't really try to change the world through politics.
Under Jobs, Apple largely avoided the unseemly games of campaign contributions and lobbying.
Consider this extraordinary fact: despite being a $100-billion-a-year company in a rapidly changing industry, Apple never formed a political action committee.
This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.
I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten t... (more)
New York City may soon shed its infamous reputation as the pot bust capital of the world. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly Monday issued an internal order to the NYPD telling officers they can no longer arrest people for marijuana possession in public view if the marijuana was not in public view before officers either searched the person and produced it or the person produced it after an officer's demand tha... A petition to legalize and regulate marijuana quickly jumped to the top of a the White House's online petition site on Thursday, the first same day it was launched.
The petition, on the White House's "We the People" site, asks: "Isn't it time to legalize and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol? If not, please explain why you feel that the continued criminalization of cannabis will achieve ... (more)
Back in May, Buffalo teen Jamey Rodermeyer contributed a video to the "It Gets Better" campaign. Though only 14, Rodermeyer felt he had a message of hope to send whoever was watching. Now, four months later, he's dead of a suicide.
Jamey's parents, who found him dead at their home early Monday morning, say that he had been bullied because of his perceived sexuality for years, but that they thought that he was doing better, having started high school three weeks ago. Following his... (more)
I saw this whole "it gets better" nonsense on reddit a while ago and it was obvious it was totally misguided and a misdiagnosis of the problem. It doesn't matter if things get better in the future, the school system is a prison and the culture in them is the same as the prison culture. The perpetual age segregation assures no one with any wisdom is with these kids to keep things civil and help mediate conflict. Instead, it's a lord of the flies type situation where it's a war of all against all. School is a 12 year jail sentence, choose homeschooling or private schooling in Montessori, or try unschooling which is better than them all. Kids don't need coping mechanisms, they need freedom. How many more children have to die before people realize these government schools are pure evil? - Chris
