Sick people used like laboratory rats in GM trialsGenetically modified potatoes developed by Monsanto, the multinational biotech company, have been fed to sick patients in an experiment. Rats that ate similar potatoes in the research suffered reductions in the weight of their hearts and prostate glands.
Dr Michael Antoniou, reader in molecular genetics at Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine, said use of humans was "irresponsible and totally unethical, especially when already ill subjects were enrolled. These people tr... (more)

Call that humiliation?I share the outrage expressed in the British press over the treatment of our naval personnel accused by Iran of illegally entering their waters. It is a disgrace. We would never dream of treating captives like this - allowing them to smoke cigarettes, for example, even though it has been proven that smoking kills. And as for compelling poor servicewoman Faye Turney to wear a black headscarf, and then allowing the picture to be posted around the world - have the Iranians no concept of civilised b... (more)

Now scientists create a sheep that's 15% humanChimera: sheep have 15 per cent human cells and 85 per cent animal cells
Scientists have created the world's first human-sheep chimera - which has the body of a sheep and half-human organs.
The sheep have 15 per cent human cells and 85 per cent animal cells - and their evolution brings the prospect of animal organs being transplanted into humans one step closer.
Professor Esmail Zanjani, of the University of Nevada, has spent seven years and &p... (more)

Implantable brain chips: ethical and policy issuesThe future may include the reality of science fiction's "cyborgs," persons who have developed some intimate and occasionally necessary relationship with a machine. It is likely that computer chips implanted in our brains and acting as sensors or actuators may soon not only assist the blind and those with failing memory, but even bestow fluency in a new language, enable "recognition" of previously unmet individuals and provide instantaneous access to encyclopedic databases.

Erasing the Pain of the Past March 20, 2007 - "I'd take it in a second," said Sgt. Michael Walcott, an Iraq War veteran, referring to an experimental drug with the potential to target and erase traumatic memories.
Walcott, who served in a Balad-based transportation unit that regularly took mortar fire, now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Since returning to the United States two years ago, he has been on antidepressants and in group therapy as he tries to put his life back together and heal from t... (more)

Chemicals May Play Role in Rise in ObesityToo many calories and too little exercise are undeniably the major factors contributing to the obesity epidemic, but several recent animal studies suggest that environmental exposure to widely used chemicals may also help make people fat.
The evidence is preliminary, but a number of researchers are pursuing indications that the chemicals, which have been shown to cause abnormal changes in animals' sexual development, can also trigger fat-cell activity -- a process scientists call ... (more)

Who Controls the Food Controls the People "It is in the biological sciences that the most exciting possibilities suggest themselves... I will only speculate on a few among these possibilities which might have great effects on human life.
"I have already referred to the possibility of quite new sources of food and I need not enlarge on that further.
". . . hormones, those internal chemical secretions which so largely regulate the operations of the human body. The artificial use of hormones has al... (more)

Be More Than You Can BeThe lab is climate-controlled to 104 degrees Fahrenheit and 66 percent humidity. Sitting inside the cramped room, even for a few minutes, is an unpleasantly moist experience. I’ve spent the last 40 minutes on a treadmill angled at a 9 percent grade. My face is chili-red, my shirt soaked with sweat. My breath is coming in short, unsatisfactory gasps. The sushi and sake I had last night are in full revolt. The tiny speakers on the shelf blasting “Living on a Prayer” are definitel... (more)

Cocktail of additives found in child medicinesChildren's medicines contain a cocktail of additives which are banned in food and drink aimed at under-threes, says a report out today from the Food Commission.
Dyes, preservatives, and sweeteners were found in cough syrups, paracetamol tablets and teething gels. One product contained eight E numbers.
The campaign group looked at 41 medicines for children under three. Only one, Superdrug children's dry cough syrup, was totally free of colourings and preservatives. S... (more)

Dawn of the GM babies?Scientists will be able to carry out genetic experiments on human embryos for the first time under controversial Government plans.
Ministers have given the green light to research that some doctors warn raises the disturbing prospect of "genetically modified babies".
Proposed legislation says researchers would be allowed to alter the genetic blueprint of an embryo up to two weeks old. Ethical campaigners fear this could herald an era of eugenics in which couples wou... (more)

Go-ahead signalled for animal-human embryosBritish scientists will be allowed to create part-human, part-animal embryos for research into potentially life-saving medical treatments, the Government signalled yesterday.
Caroline Flint, the health minister, is considering removing a ban on such work from a draft bill that will form the basis for new laws on fertility treatment and embryo research.
Two teams of British researchers have applied for permission to create "cybrid" embryos that ... (more)

Research supports mercury-autism link It was reported repeatedly in 2006 that the link between mercury-containing vaccines and autism has been disproven. Yet if one looks at the most recent research coming from some of our major universities, one may draw the opposite conclusion.
What we have learned in the last couple of years is that the underlying medical condition of autism is neuroinflammatory disease. In a study conducted at John Hopkins University, brain tissue from deceased autistic p... (more)

HPV Vaccine: The Fine PrintYesterday, Jacque Reid, former BET personality, spoke about the newly approved HPV vaccine on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Can I say I wasn't satisfied with the media's diluted version of the vaccine? And it surely didn't help that Sybil, one of the morning show personalities, seemed to give her approval of such a vaccine with no formal research?
Not one to allow the fine print to sit idle in the background, I shot off an e-mail to Tom at blackamericaweb.com. So far, I haven't rec... (more)

Judge sentences girl to abort babyAn Italian judge ordered a 13 year old girl from Torino to abort her unborn child because her parents were opposed to the baby.
Italian legislation states that a minor is not allowed to decide whether to abort or not and the 'decision' falls entirely on the guardians or parents.
The shocking story was brought into light by Italian newspaper La Stampa in which the paper reports that the girl didn't want to abort the baby but had to after the ruling. She then had to ... (more)

Social engineering: The generation of 'damaged' girlsA generation of very young girls is being psychologically damaged by inappropriate "sexy" clothing, toys and images in the media that are corrupting childhood, leading psychologists warn today.
They say marketing takes unfair advantage of children's desire for affection and the need to conform, leading to eating disorders, low self-esteem and depression.
Their report echoes a warning by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, and follows a United Nations st... (more)

Pupils should get after-school sex education tailored to their experiences, say academicsPupils should be taught sex education based on their sexual experience, academics suggest in a radical departure from current methods. Their survey of the sex lives of 13 to 16-year-olds concludes that the range of sexual experience among teenagers is so varied that safer sex cannot be encouraged with one standard model of sex education.
"Some boys are still playing with Lego while others are already having sex, think they know it all but say that contraception is the girl's probl... (more)
