ABC News Weighs "Pros and Cons" of Castrating Rapists
ABC NewsDec 13
Though leading the polls in Iowa, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has received additional and unwanted attention in recent days for his role in pardoning a convicted rapist who went on to rape and murder at least one and possibly two women after his release in 1999.

Wayne Dumond was convicted in 1984 of raping a teenaged girl who was a distant cousin of Bill Clinton, then governor of Arkansas. While out on bail and awaiting trial, Dumond claimed men in black ski ma

Nanotechnology a 'bigger concern' than GM foods
ABC NewsDec 06
The lifting of bans on genetically modified crops has revived the debate about the safety of the food we eat.

But the next step in industrial food production has got Australia's food regulator bracing itself for even more controversy.

Opponents to nanotechnology say it is a much scarier prospect than GM food, and while it can make food look better and last longer, there are fears about how it might affect the human body.

The regulator now faces the di

The risk in nanotechnology
The EconomistDec 06
WAVING a packet of carbon nanotubes accusingly at the assembled American politicians during a hearing last month in Congress, Andrew Maynard was determined to make a point. The nanotechnology expert at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars in Washington, DC, had bought the tiny tubes on the internet. They had arrived in the post along with a safety sheet describing them as graphite and thus requiring no special precautions beyond those needed for a nuisance dust.

Maryland Schools Have Huge Financial Stake in Coerced Vaccinations of Schoolchildren
News TargetNov 30
What could possibly be behind these forced vaccinations? There are several factors that could be at play, but the primary suspicion that stands out in my mind is money. So I called the communications department of the Prince George's County School District to ask them specifically some questions about the amount of money the school district gets paid per child per day. They have not returned my call to answer the questions. Thankfully, the National Center for Education Statistics has some great ... (more)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday issued a warning about Pfizer Inc's anti-smoking drug, Chantix, amid reports of at least one death, and suicidal thoughts and behavior linked to the medication.

An early agency assessment "reveals that many of the cases reflect new-onset of depressed mood, suicidal ideation (thoughts) and changes in emotion and behavior within days to weeks" of starting treatment, the FDA said in a posting about the new review.

Desperate measures: Toni Vernelli was steralised at age 27 to reduce her carbon footprint

Had Toni Vernelli gone ahead with her pregnancy ten years ago, she would know at first hand what it is like to cradle her own baby, to have a pair of innocent eyes gazing up at her with unconditional love, to feel a little hand slipping into hers - and a voice calling her Mummy.

But the very thought makes her shudder with horror.

Because when Toni te

Human-animal hybrid embryos should be legal says Catholic Church
The TimesNov 26
The Roman Catholic Church has called for women to be allowed to give birth to human-animal hybrids created in the laboratory.

Embryos injected with animal cells, or chimeras, should be treated as human beings where they have a preponderance of human genes, the bishops say in a sumbission to a Government committee.

And there should be no ban on implanting such hybrid embryos in the womb of the woman who supplied the original egg, they say in their submission on the D

The Daily MailNov 11
PARENTS of sick children in Britain will be allowed to use IVF to create "spare-part babies" under controversial laws published yesterday.

The legislation will dramatically relax rules on IVF clinics creating "saviour siblings" who can help cure their older brothers and sisters of medical conditions such as leukemia.

Experts said that one day they could create a "designer baby" with kidneys perfectly compatible with a sibling suffering renal failure.

Vaccine "failure" exposes Aussies to AIDS virus
ABC NewsNov 09
Nine Australians are believed to be among thousands of people who are unaware a once-promising vaccine for AIDS has increased their infection risk, after they participated in clinical trials around the world.

The multinational trials involving more than 3,000 HIV-negative volunteers were cancelled in September after a large-scale study found the vaccine was not effective at preventing infection.

One of the world's most eminent scientists was embroiled in an extraordinary row last night after he claimed that black people were less intelligent than white people and the idea that "equal powers of reason" were shared across racial groups was a delusion.
