Hundreds upon hundreds of concerned citizens took to the streets in Galway County, Ireland to protest a planned asylum center at the Connemara Gateway Hotel in the small town of Oughterard. “The plan would see a 20 percent increase in the population of Oughterard overnight,” county councilor Tom Welby said. Over 1,500 people marched silently for three kilometers from the village to the hotel. According to the Connacht Tribune, the vast majority of the locals contend that Oughterard simply does not have the infrastructure or services needed to support a large influx of migrants to the area. The silent procession, which began on the grounds of Oughterard’s Catholic Church, followed a public meeting that was held last Wednesday where the town’s locals voted overwhelming against the migrant center.
