EVERETT, Mass. —An Everett police officer forced his 10-year-old son to lie facedown as he whipped the boy with a belt, prosecutors said Friday. Officer Jermaine Bellard, 32, of Saugus, pleaded not guilty to one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and held on $1,000 bail. Prosecutors said Bellard was angry after the boy's principal called to say the child was misbehaving in school. The boy showed his mother a bruise and welts that were on his lower body, prosecutors said. "He stated his father had him lay down on the bed, face down, and he beat him with a belt, hitting him 14 times," Essex County Assistant District Attorney Mark Byron said.
