Woman Walking On "Wrong Side Of The Street" Tackled & Arrested For Not Submitting To Cop

From CBS 19:
A Whitehouse woman claims she was unfairly arrested for failing to stop for a police officer. She says the cop was acting suspicious and she felt threatened, but police officials say she handled it the wrong way.

Melissa Bonnette says she was on her usual morning walk around 9:45 a.m. Friday when a man in uniform on a motorcycle pulled up next to her, asking if she lived in the area and if he could speak to her.

"I thought that maybe he was flirting," she said. "I just thought it was odd, I thought it was odd. I wasn't really sure but I felt uncomfortable because there wasn't anyone around."

She says she was worried he might not even a real cop, so she refused to stop and began jogging away from him.

"He just crept along beside me on his motorcycle and he started saying, 'Hey ma'am! I want to talk to you. Hey stop, ma'am! I want to talk to you.' Then my anxiety rose even higher," she said.

"The motorcycle has a patch on both sides of the gas tank. It's black and white and says 'Whitehouse Police,' and has red and blue lights on it," Whitehouse Police Chief Craig Shelton said. "So you have to take it for what it is. Do you think he's a Whitehouse police officer? Why would you think he's someone impersonating a police officer?"

That's when Bonnette says he got off his bike, chased her down, tackled her and threw her in handcuffs.

98231 She obviously follows the news and knows that there are a lot of sick cops out there. Several stories this week alone about cops raping and abusing woman. Cops as a profession are 4 times more likely to abuse their own spouses than other professions. She was scared because of that and because she had no idea why he wanted to talk to her. After all he never said "hey lady, you are walking on the wrong side of the street". In her mind she never thought she was violating a law, so why is this scary guy with a gun asking to talk to me.

6838 anyone can see she is dangerous at the same time she put many others in grave danger by walking in the wrong direction she's lucky this hero did not shoot. I hope she gets prison time and used as an example so others will think twice about walking the wrong direction . of course I'm being sarcastic. but really its getting so bad out there we have laws we never heard of that are to be used when they want to steal our rights when JESUS comes back we won't have police anymore.

7121 This lady was NOT breaking the law. I just watched the video. She was walking on the grass to the side of the road. The requirement to face traffic only applies if you are walking ON the roadway. So not only do we have an id10t cop, we have a police chief that either doesn't know the law, or is just making up crap. Neither would surprise me.

From the Texas Transportation Code:

Sec. 552.006. USE OF SIDEWALK. (a) A pedestrian may not walk along and on a roadway if an adjacent sidewalk is provided and is accessible to the pedestrian.

(b) If a sidewalk is not provided, a pedestrian walking -->along and on a highway<-- shall if possible walk on:

(1) the left side of the roadway; or

(2) the shoulder of the highway facing oncoming traffic.

Notice the wording I have bracketed above - "along and on a highway". "And" means both - walking both along a road AND on it. This opposed to crossing it, for example, where you might walk on the road but not along it, and keeping left wouldn't make sense.

She was not walking on the road. She was walking on grass to the side of the road (watch the video). The requirement to keep left doesn't apply to her. Case closed.

67233 can you imagine what might have happened if this had occurred in gun-happy Florida? Stand your Ground? That could have been really ugly. As it stands, if this sheriff was appointed or elected or whatever, he needs to step down before his little pea- brain implodes and transports him back in time to the 1920s. Where he would feel very comfortable.
