I enjoyed this article in the NYT pointing out he's a politician, and he is viewed as just that--a politician--in his home town of South Africa. The reverence for the man comes from those who don't know him and didn't live under his rule. Evidently, the people who worship him most in his own country are those from his own political party who benefit most from it.
