What about the Torture of Innocents?

by Jacob G. Hornberger

It is shocking enough that the United States is even engaged in a debate over whether the U.S. government should be torturing or not. Historically, torture has been committed by evil, medieval regimes, whose methods of brutally torturing people are memorialized in torture museums in various parts of Great Britain and Europe, or by communist or other dictatorial regimes around the world. Never in my wildest dreams, when I was young, ever dream that the United States would be discussing whether to embrace torture as a formal policy, much less actually adopting it.

80202 I've always pointed out these points, but pro-torture folks just ignore them. I think it is a sickness, that they like the idea. There is another aspect to it too...what about the torturers, people who's JOB it is to torture? They would have to fall into one of two categories. 1) dutiful, normal people who believe it is necessary...but what does torturing people do to a normal person? It kills them bit by bit or else turns them into monsters. Or 2) sadistic bastard sociopaths that enjoy torturing people. Ether option is no good. Would any of the pro torture folk want a neighbor that had that job? Would they let their kids play over at the neighbors house? Not likely
It's also a slippery slope...after short time, not just reserved for believed terrorists, but also murder suspects, thieves, anyone. Torture can and has been used by our government to provide false "proof", such as how Bush NEEDED to link Al Queda, 911, to Iraq, because they only cared about invading just torture someone until they say what you want to hear, then use it as evidence for what you already decided to do. Torture does not "work", and also where would the line be? You have a whole village, and are "sure" (or just have a hunch) that someone in there knows of a bomb you torture 100, 1000 people in hopes of torturing the right one?
In the end, most human beings know torture is wrong, immoral, ineffective. Growing up with WWII films you knew the Nazis were bad (they didn't show the concentration camps in such films mainly was just army, fighting) because they tortured. But the torture depicted in those films was nothing compared to water boarding, and the other techniques reported used by us.
But some folks don't care (thinking "it'll never be me or anyone I care about". Which is the main problem with giving up ANY of our rights or morals.
