Peter Schiff on American Citizenship posted 03/01/2012, 1:17 PM (Jeffrey Tucker)
[Category: Commentary]
You have probably seen Peter Schiff on television, not once, but many times. Among the legions of indistinguishable talking heads out there, he stands out. He makes sense. He draws attention to reality. He is disregarding of the opinions and conventions that prevail on the financial news networks and just comes right out and says what few others are willing to say.

He gets away with it because he makes sense, is super articulate and is aggressive in getting his message out. Even if you don't watch television (I don't, not much), he has his own radio show, YouTube network, blog, social media accounts and much more. You could probably spend a good part of your day living alongside the mind of Schiff and still not hear it all.

He is also the author of How an Economy Grows and Why It Crashes. I assure you that there is nothing else like this on the market today. In many ways, it is a work of genius. Imagine learning the complexities of macroeconomics and the business cycle through a series of cleverly drawn cartoons that illustrate a kind of economic parable.

It's great for kids, but also for adults. It was originally written by his father, Irwin Schiff, and became somewhat famous in the 1980s, but this new edition improves the original because the accompanying text reduces 100 years of scholarship into a plain-English explanation of economic development and the business cycle. The themes throughout are consistent: Production comes before consumption; debt is not substitute for saving; credit is no fix for debt; economic reality cannot be held at bay forever.

I had occasion to listen to a dinner lecture by Peter at the New Hampshire Liberty Forum. The conventional wisdom is that a dinner speech should be super short — think 20 minutes — because

I've been looking at getting Irish citizenship the last few days, if your grandfather was an Irish citizen, it seems like it's rather easy, supposedly it is similar for Italians. I'm still looking into the implications, IE do you have to do jury service, is there any taxes involved if you live out of state, etc. Also, they say you need your grandfather's birth certificate, hopefully they have it on record because I do not. Supposedly Irish/Italian citizenship through descent is the holy grail of citizenship, in that it only costs a few hundred bucks vs thousands and costly 'proof of residency' requirements elsewhere. - Chris, InfoLib

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Denarius posted 03/01/2012, 1:17 PM (The Dollar Vigilante)
[Category: Economy]
History repeats itself, so the scholars say. But according to Mark Twain it just rhymes. Literary quips and hair-splitting aside, I've found that one of the most valuable things anyone can do to advance their knowledge and understanding of the world is the study of history. Now I'm not talking about the kind of history you get in grade school and university, where all you're told to do is rote-memorization of people, dates and events. To get any value whatsoever out of studying h... (more)

Turns Out, They Had Nothing To Hide posted 03/01/2012, 1:17 PM (The Agitator)

Good reporting by Lucy Steigerwald on an outrageous 13-man SWAT raid, with flashbangs, on a home suspected of illegally growing medical marijuana. It’s of course legal to grow the stuff in Colorado if you have a patient card and stay under the state limit. The residents appear to have received the full brunt force of the SWAT team because they dared to exercise their constitutional rights.

Inflation Is A Tax And The Federal Reserve Is Taxing The Living Daylights Out Of Us posted 03/01/2012, 1:15 PM (The Economic Collapse)
[Category: Economy]
Ronald Reagan once famously declared that inflation is a tax, but sadly most Americans did not really grasp what he was talking about.  If the American people truly understood what inflation was doing to them, they would be screaming bloody murder about monetary policy.  Inflation is an especially insidious tax because it is not just a tax on your income for one year.  It is a continual tax on every single dollar that you own.  As your mon... CHICAGO (CN) - A waitress viciously beaten by a Chicago cop on camera convinced a federal judge to uphold her claim that the police department orchestrated a coverup.

Anthony Abbate Jr., an off-duty Chicago police officer, brutally attacked Karolina Obrycka in 2007, while she was bartending at Jesse's Shortstop Inn.

Kim Dotcom: US Govt Is Protecting An Outdated Monopolistic Business Model posted 03/01/2012, 1:11 PM (TorrentFreak)
[Category: Science/Technology]
The dramatic shutdown of Megaupload and the US government’s case against the operators of the service has the potential to alter the entire service provider landscape, not just in the United States but all around the world. Indeed, some observers believe that has already happened. After defeating attempts to put him back behind bars yesterday, Mega founder Kim Dotcom is back with more insights into the reasons behind the site’s closure.
This is the real issue. The closure of Megaupload is the equivalent of the government shutting down Henry Ford for producing cars because it's forcing the horse and buggy industry to adapt. - Chris

The rebellion against governments is all-present even though the most important front may not be obvious to some. The deepest Revolution in North America is the quiet and largely invisible withdrawal of people from dependency on 'the syste
