Why Jason Alexander's Anti-Gun Twitter Rant Is Hypocritical Nonsense
posted 07/22/2012, 11:24 PM (InformationLiberation) [Category: Commentary]
Actor Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame penned an anti-gun rant on his twitter account earlier today. The post made the front page of Reddit and it's getting a lot of circulation. It's an interesting read if not just to see the hypocrisy supporters of civilian disarmament exhibit.
This morning, I made a comment about how I do not understand people who support public ownership of assault style weapons like the AR-15 used in the Colorado massacre. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15
That comment, has of course, inspired a lot of feedback. There have been many tweets of agreement and sympathy but many, many more that have been challenging at the least, hostile and vitriolic at the worst.
Clearly, the angry, threatened and threatening, hostile comments are coming from gun owners and gun advocates. Despite these massacres recurring and despite the 100,000 Americans that die every year due to domestic gun violence - these people see no value to even considering some kind of control as to what kinds of weapons are put in civilian hands. Note, in "civilian hands."Many of them cite patriotism as their reason - true patriots support the Constitution adamantly and wholly. Constitution says citizens have the right to bear arms in order to maintain organized militias. I'm no constitutional scholar so here it is from the document itself:
As passed by the Congress:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
As ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State:
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not ... (more) |
Police Officer Killed Victim Of Break-In
posted 07/22/2012, 1:52 PM (The Columbus Dispatch) [Category: Tyranny/Police State]
Maybe if the police officer had arrived just a minute later, the young man would still be alive.
That’s what the friends and family of Destin Thomas say, after Columbus police confirmed yesterday that it was one of their own officers who shot and killed Thomas while responding to a 911 call he had made on Tuesday morning.
Police gave few details yesterday about what happened between the 21-year-old Thomas and Officer William Kaufman, a 17-year veteran, citing the on... (more) |
Firefighters Don't Fight Fires
posted 07/22/2012, 1:51 PM (Marginal Revolution) [Category: Economy]
Over the past 35 years, the number of fires in the United States has fallen by more than 40% while the number of career firefighters has increased by more than 40% (data).
(N.B. Volunteer firefighters were mostly pushed out of the big cities in the late 19th century but there are a surprising number who remain in rural areas and small to... (more)Wow, this was absolutely eye opening, now it makes sense why I've been seeing firefighter trucks everywhere on the road where there's a car accident, I'm always expecting to see some burned out automobile but instead it's just a common crash. I never realized they're literally just showing up to make it seem like they're doing something! This is a must read! - Chris |
Freedom is Dead; Long Live Freedom.
posted 07/22/2012, 1:51 PM (Wendy McElroy) [Category: Commentary] Why has America, a nation known for rugged individualism, descended so quickly into submission and a police state?
In 1831, the French political theorist and historian Alexis de Tocqueville received a commission to examine the prison system in America. His personal purpose, however, was to examine the character of a new America to which many Frenchmen looked as a model. After turning in his official report on prisons, De Tocqueville published his more personal findings: a pivotal... (more) |
£13tn: hoard hidden from taxman by global elite
posted 07/22/2012, 1:50 PM (The Guardian) [Category: Economy] A global super-rich elite has exploited gaps in cross-border tax rules to hide an extraordinary £13 trillion ($21tn) of wealth offshore – as much as the American and Japanese GDPs put together – according to research commissioned by the campaign group Tax Justice Network.
James Henry, former chief economist at consultancy McKinsey and an expert on tax havens, has compiled the most detailed estimates yet of the size of the offshore economy in a new report, The Price of Offshore Rev... (more)Socialist drivel. Not having your money stolen by the government is not "hoarding," most everything these people are doing is perfectly legal, what these socialist control freaks want is a global fascist government where there are no "tax havens" and everyone is looted to the fullest extent. The solution to the "problem" in this article is let everyone move their cash off shore and avoid taxes, not bring everyone under a global fascist state. - Chris |
Putter, Fritter, and Guess
posted 07/22/2012, 1:50 PM (Gary North) [Category: Commentary] If this were a law firm, you would be wise to hire another.
I define puttering as follows: "Unsystematic work that fills time without accomplishing much output." I define frittering as follows: "The refusal to take advantage of opportunities that have been placed in your hand."
I have known some very successful people over the years. Some have been rich. Others have been influential. All of them have had this in common. They have not puttered. T... (more)One of Gary North's best articles ever. - Chris |
From Patriots to Expatriates
posted 07/22/2012, 1:48 PM (Taki's Magazine) [Category: Commentary] Immigrants in the early 20th century celebrated US citizenship. The threat of illness, death, and separation from their wives and children failed to deter these Europeans who fled their home countries for the promise of a better future.
To them, the United States was a safe, free haven distant from the brutal tyrants and collectivist academics across the Atlantic. My ancestors knew that Ellis Island was the beginning of everything they'd ever wanted. Angelo LaSorsa put one foot on... (more) |
Obama's Business Comment...
posted 07/22/2012, 1:48 PM (Randall Holcombe) [Category: Economy] Many readers will be aware that last week in a speech President Obama said "If you've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." There have been many comments on this already — most of them I’ve seen have been negative — but I’m still going to add a few words, because I find the comment so troubling.
If the credit for a business person’s success belongs to “somebody else,” who is that somebody else?
In the same speech the president sai... (more) |

Don't Die in 2013: Confiscatory 55% Death Tax Set to Take Effect
posted 07/22/2012, 1:47 PM (Americans for Tax Reform) [Category: Economy] The 2001 tax relief bill (EGTRRA), drastically reduced the impact of the death tax over the course of a decade, so that it was eliminated entirely for one year in 2010 — a good year to die, joked a number of pundits. The bill lowered marginal rates and increased the applicable exclusion amount, but it also included a provision allowing individuals to carry over exclusion dollars that were unused by their spouse at the time of his or her death. This “portability” measure effectively increased the... (more) |

posted 07/22/2012, 1:47 PM (Patch.com) [Category: Tyranny/Police State] The trial of a New Lenox man charged with punching a Joliet man into a coma during a bar fight ground to a halt when a Mokena Detective said he had shot a photo of the defendant's hand that no one can seem to find.
Will County Judge Sarah Jones gave the Mokena police 11 days to come up with the missing picture. The police couldn't find it, and attorneys for the New Lenox man, 23-year-old Joseph Messina, moved for a mistrial.
Then on Thursday, the same detective said... (more) |
Reuters: Kim plans economic change in North Korea
posted 07/22/2012, 1:45 PM (Reuters) [Category: Economy] BEIJING (Reuters) - Impoverished North Korea is gearing up to experiment with agricultural and economic reforms after young leader Kim Jong-un and his powerful uncle purged the country's top general for opposing change, a source with ties to both Pyongyang and Beijing said.
The source added that the cabinet had created a special bureau to take control of the decaying economy from the military, one of the world's largest, which under Kim's father was given pride of place in running... (more) |

Cockburn was the co-editor with Jeffrey St. Clair of the political newsletter Counterpunch. On the publication's blog, St. Clair writes, "Alex kept his illness a tightly guarded secret.
