Free Speech and the Police posted 02/16/2014, 3:17 PM (Logan Albright)
[Category: Tyranny/Police State]
The traffic cop stands alone as one of the most unpleasant and unnecessary forms of law enforcement. Under the halfhearted guise of protecting public safety – a pretense that no one really buys into – these government agents spend most of their time extracting revenue from motorists for violating arbitrary and unscientific standards, and who are for the most part posing no significant risk to anyone.

Still, it is one thing when a passing policeman happens to witness a traffic viol

Government's Addiction to Prohibition posted 02/16/2014, 3:17 PM (Will Grigg)
[Category: Tyranny/Police State]
The death, by heroin overdose, of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman inspired media discussion of what has been called the “heroin epidemic.” Little, if any, attention has been devoted to the fact that such an epidemic, if it exists, underscores the patent futility of the war on drugs.

Commentator Tom McPherren points out that the US government has spent a century attempting to enforce heroin prohibition. While the addiction rate has remained virtually unchanged since 1914

Don't Get Out the Vote posted 02/16/2014, 3:17 PM (Sheldon Richman)
[Category: Commentary]
A seminar student once became upset with me for suggesting that instead of running get-out-the-vote campaigns, the government should keep the dates of elections and the locations of polling places secret so that only people with enough initiative and interest to ferret out the information could vote.

It was not a serious suggestion, but the college-aged young woman didn't catch that, and she thought my idea was horrible. My point, of course, was that making it easy and even social

How A Grand Jury's Indictment Is Indistinguishable From Being Found Guilty posted 02/16/2014, 3:16 PM (Techdirt)
[Category: Tyranny/Police State]
A recent post of mine took on grand juries, specifically the astounding fact that a North Carolina grand jury managed to crank out 276 indictments in four hours -- or roughly, one indictment every 52 seconds.
