Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is planning to deliberately provoke China with an inflammatory visit to Taiwan on Tuesday night, despite warnings from Chinese officials that "grave consequences" will follow.
Pelosi "plans to meet Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday," the Financial Times reports.
"President Joe Biden dispatched senior officials, including national security adviser Jake Sullivan, to lay out the risks to Pelosi, but people familiar with the situation said she had decided to press ahead with the landmark trip," FT reports.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to visit Taiwan on Tuesday, defying Chinese authorities who have warned of consequences if the trip takes place, according to people familiar with her plans.The Washington Post's Josh Rogin reported last week that Pelosi sees the trip as a way to cement her "legacy."
Biden reportedly warned Pelosi against the visit but Pelosi's "legacy" is all that matters.
