President Donald Trump on Tuesday threw right-wing populist Matteo Salvini under the bus and backed the current leftist prime minister and his leftist-socialist coalition. "Starting to look good for the highly respected Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, Giuseppe Conte," Trump said Tuesday on Twitter. "Represented Italy powerfully at the G-7. Loves his Country greatly & works well with the USA. A very talented man who will hopefully remain Prime Minister!"
This is who he just endorsed:
Salvini is currently in the midst of a crucial election where he could potentially become Prime Minister but Trump has thrown his support behind the leftist Prime Minister who is allying with socialists.
I don't know whether this will hurt Salvini's chances or not but I doubt it will help. The words of Paul Manafort talking with Steve Bannon after Bannon took over Trump's campaign as described in Vicky Ward's book "Kushner, Inc." often run through my mind these days... Seems prophetic.
