The Mexican government is directly involved in an attempt to subvert the presidential election in the United States.

On Sunday Bloomberg Business reported that while Mexico officially claims to respect the sovereignty of the United States, behind the scenes its diplomats are working to legalize thousands of illegal immigrants in order to shift the election away from Donald Trump.

The Republican frontrunner has promised to build a wall along the border to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country.

"This is a historic moment where the Mexican consulate will open its doors to carry out these types of events in favor of the Mexican community," Adrian Sosa, a spokesman for the Mexican consulate in Chicago, told Bloomberg. The consulate has sponsored "citizenship clinics" around the United States.

Sosa said the Mexican government hosts the clinics and activists assist illegal immigrants in becoming US citizens.

"Those who use this to vote, that's up to each individual," said Laura Espinosa, deputy consul in Mexico's consulate in Las Vegas. "We don't have any opinion on that, because that would be totally interfering in internal affairs of the country."

The Obama administration has assisted the effort to fastback citizenship. Last September Obama kicked off a national campaign urging illegal immigrants to file for citizenship. Applications are available at "citizenship corners" in public libraries.

Earlier this month Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto spoke out against Trump and said his candidacy has damaged relations between the two countries.

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox said Mexico will never pay for a wall along the border. "I'm not going to pay for that f—ing wall," he told Fusion television in February. Donald Trump responded by saying "the wall just got ten feet taller."

California, a state with a large Latino population, permits non-citizens to obtain a driver's license, register to vote and participate in national elections. "All 50 states limit voting to citizens except when the state allows you to sort-of sneak in without proving your citizenship by getting a driver's license instead," notes Judge Andrew Napolitano.

The Obama Justice Department supports allowing people the vote without having to prove they are registered.

In February Attorney General Loretta Lynch filed a brief in a lawsuit brought by the League of Women Voters. The lawsuit challenges a requirement voters must show proof of citizenship on voter registration forms. The Justice Department urged US District Judge Richard Leon to issue a preliminary injunction to prevent Kansas, Alabama and Georgia from using the forms. The League argues the requirement discriminates against poor, minority and elderly voters.

The Justice Department would normally defend the US Elections Assistance Commission (EAC) in such a lawsuit, but under the direction of the Democrats and the Obama administration it has sided with the League and those who believe illegal immigrants should be allowed to vote in presidential elections.

In 2013 the Supreme Court struck down an Arizona law requiring proof of citizenship in elections. The late Antonin Scalia voted with the Court in the decision permitting states to seek approval for changes to voter registration forms. The following year a federal appeals court ruled the EAC is not required to make such changes to voter registration forms and the Supreme Court declined to review the decision.
