In a ridiculous display of police overreach, a Minnesota woman was pulled over by a St. Paul police officer who saw her take a drink of coffee while traveling on I-94 Monday.Lindsey Krieger says she was attempting to merge onto I-94 from University Avenue in St. Paul when the cop got behind her and turned on his flashing lights.

“I didn't even have enough time to merge up to the right speed limit yet, so I wasn't speeding or anything like that,” Krieger said. “I was completely dumbfounded. I thought it was a joke!”

“She was like, 'Do you know what you were doing wrong? Do you know why you were pulled over?'” Krieger added. “I said, 'no I have no idea what you're talking about.' And finally after asking me a few more times she says, 'Drinking coffee. It's against the law to drink coffee while you're driving.'"

St. Paul Police Sgt. Mike Ernster took up for the stop saying, “inattentive driving relates to anything that takes your attention away from those obligations of every driver, which is to pay attention.”

Krieger was not cited for drinking the coffee – just a warning – but the officer did ticket her for a seat-belt violation.

“She came back and said, 'I'm going to give you a warning for the coffee but I'm going to give you a no seat belt ticket' which I happened to take off when I was pulled over,” Krieger said.

The woman says she plans on fighting the ticket in court, and asserted that the stop will not prevent her from drinking coffee in her own property in the future.

If police are going to start pulling over everyone they see drinking or eating, 70-80 percent of us are in for a rude awakening.
