MIAMI (WSVN) -- A Miami-Dade Police Officer has been arrested after he was caught on surveillance video stealing gasoline from a county site intended for police cruisers only and then filling up his wife's BMW. Officers are allowed to fill their squad cars for free, but this perk doesn't come with a friends and family discount. According to the State Attorney's Office and Miami-Dade officials, Officer Emil Lugo has been charged with felony fraud for stealing the county fuel at County Fuel Site #17. Police said this fuel station is where Lugo got a lot of his gas. Police from Lugo's department began watching him with cameras when they noticed he might have been using too much fuel. A statement released by the State Attorney's Office reads in part, "This investigation arose from concerns that Sergeant Lugo was improperly using his Miami-Dade County access during the period from January 2015 through March 2015. Not only was Sergeant Lugo fueling his vehicle at a fuel station rarely used by police officers, (the 7900 SW 107 Avenue site was primarily utilized by the Solid Waste Department) but the computer records tracing the amounts of fuel consumed appeared to exceed the miles driven."
