A mother of two in Gastonia, North Carolina was shot dead by police in her own home after she called them for help when two intruders entered the property. As reported by WCC Charlotte, Betty Sexton, 43, called 911 and asked police to come and remove two unwanted guests who she said were no longer welcome in her home, but would not leave. The audio from the 911 call indicates that Sexton likely knew the two intruders, who were connected to her boyfriend, who also lives in the property. When police arrived on the scene they found Sexton holding an old musket gun, in an attempt to protect herself. According to Sexton’s sister, her boyfriend told police that the gun was not loaded or functioning, and when the cops ordered her to put the weapon down, she cooperated. However, Officer LaDoniqua Neely for some reason decided Sexton was a deadly threat and shot her. Sexton was rushed to hospital, but died on arrival. “My sister would not hurt anyone. That officer still shot my sister dead in the chest,” said Debra Kennedy. Kennedy described the gun her sister was holding as “An old musket gun. It has powder that goes down in it, and you got to use a rod down in it. Even pellets have to put down in it.” Officer Neely has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted by the State Bureau of Investigations, at the request of the Gastonia Police Department. “We’re not getting the full picture of it,” said neighbor, Ron Radford. “And if the rest of society wants to draw conclusions based off one-sided information, I think that’s reckless.” Gastonia Police have already shot and killed three people so far this year. "We haven't had this many officer-involved shootings this close together since I started working here in 1994," a spokeswoman with the Department told reporters. This case provides yet another example of how calling the police into your home can have deadly consequences. The frequency of cops entering Americans’ homes and killing the owners, even when they have been called there to help, is disturbing. |
