FALL RIVER — New Bedford police officer Jean Gomes, who pleaded not guilty Friday in Superior Court to three counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, has been suspended without pay, Police Chief David Provencher said. Judge Renee P. Dupuis imposed the mutually agreed upon bail of $2,500 cash. She also instructed the 58-year-old canine officer to have no contact with the victim. According to court documents, the victim is a 10-year-old New Bedford resident who is known to Gomes. The district attorney's office has identified her as a female. Provencher said, as of Friday, Gomes is suspended without pay from the department. The notice, signed by Mayor Jon Mitchell, was being served to Gomes on Friday.
