Cops Assault Man With Down Syndrome Over "Suspicious Bulge" In His Pants

Another fine example of the exemplary "service" the state's goon-squads provide "for our protection."

The attorney for a man with Down Syndrome who was badly injured after a confrontation with Miami-Dade Police Saturday night says his family is shocked over what they say was an unnecessary attack.

"The family is very upset and really shocked, to be honest," attorney Philip Gold said Wednesday. "They can't believe that this could have happened, let alone to their their son who is an innocent, sweet individual with Down syndrome."

Gilberto Powell, 22, was stopped by officers in the area of Southwest 111th Place and Southwest 138th Street around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a Miami-Dade Police report.

The report said officers spotted a bulge in Powell's waist band and when they tried to pat him down, he tried to flee. Police say Powell broke free as officers tried to place him in handcuffs, hitting his forehead on the ground.

Powell hit one of the officers in the chest and continued to struggle until one of the officers "struck [Powell] in the left side of his face with an open hand in an attempt to subdue him," the report said.

After Powell was finally handcuffed and questioned, the officers realized he was "mentally challenged, was not capable of understanding our commands, and that the bulge in his waistband was a colostomy bag," the report said.

I find it hard to believe they didn't realize the man was mentally challenged before they beat him, but perhaps the cops are mentally challenged themselves.

184245 Wow whoever posted this article is an idiot. Please do yourself a favor a go one of the miamidade police districts and request you want to go on a ride-a-long with an officer. I guarantee your opinion will change from seeing what police have to deal with in just one day. When you speak about things you don't know about your bound to speak ingnorance.

I wouldn't "ride-a-long with an officer" anymore than I'd go to the ghettoist of ghettos and "ride-a-long" with a violent armed gang member. Statistically, I'd probably be safer with the gang member.

6658 In my personal opinion a individual with down syndrome is not a challenge to identify, those are sworn officers of the law, they were trained to the "highest requirements" if identifying an individual Is that hard for multiple officers, than they shouldn't be cops, yeah Miami cops have it "rough" but a gang banger or a thug is alot easier to spot than a helpless man with a disability, every single officer that partook in the beating should be relieved of duty, there is no excuse for that, that is embarrassing, hope they feel great about the embarrassment they have brought upon there families, maybe they should take more vision tests than "anti-drug" classes, well I guess you couldn't expect much from Miami p.d, but this is a rediculous, uncalled for act of poor misjudgment, you would think that cops would have good judgment right? That's what they are paid over 100k a year for right? I guess wrong, when I here such acts like this is makes me embarrassed to live here
