CFL bulbs also don’t fit some older designs of lampshades and overhead lights, don’t work with a dimmer switch or three-way lamp socket, and don’t always fit tightly in older lamp sockets, which can lead to a flicker or damage the socket. “I recommend using higher wattage CFL and waiting a full minute before expecting the CFL to perform at its maximum,” Cox said.
