![]() Earlier today, Cryptome posted an email sent to John Young by PayPal explaining the website’s account was locked down. “As part of our security measures, we regularly screen activity in the PayPal system. During a recent screening, we noticed an issue regarding your account,” the email sent by the PayPal Account Review Department states. “For your protection, we have limited access to your account until additional security measures can be completed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.” It appears Paypal used the excuse that Cryptome has recently received an increase in donations to shut down the account. “During the past two weeks there have been news reports about Cryptome.org that has led to an unusual increase of donations,” writes John Young. “Usually donations come in once or twice a week, as you can see from our PayPal account. Most recently donations have dropped to a customary small number after the recent surge.” Mr. Young appeared on Alex Jones’ syndicated radio show on February 26. Cryptome was briefly removed from the internet after Microsoft filed a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notice late last month. Network Solutions, Cryptome’s site host, said it was following DMCA protocol when it removed Cryptome for posting Microsoft’s Online Services Global Criminal Compliance Handbook. On February 26, eWeek reported that Microsoft withdrew its request to take down Cryptome and the site went back online. Read the email exchange between John Young and Paypal on the Cryptome site. |
