MUMBAI, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Gunmen in India Thursday shot and killed the lawyer defending one of the accused in the Nov. 26, 2008, Mumbai terror attacks, local authorities said.

Police said they believe Shahid Azmi, 32, who had been defending Fahim Ansari, accused of helping plan the Mumbai carnage, was shot by three attackers, who then fled, CNN reported. The motive for the killing was not clear.

The Times of India quoted authorities as saying Azmi was shot at close range by the gunmen who went to his office in the Kurla section of Mumbai posing as clients. Azmi died en route to a hospital.

Ansari is accused along with Sabahuddin Ahmed of making preparations such as maps of terror targets for the 10 gunmen who carried out the Mumbai attacks. Nine of those gunmen were later killed by Indian security forces and the 10th, Pakistani Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, 21, who was captured alive, is the third accused in the case.

The nearly three-day terror siege of Mumbai, India's financial capital, left more than 160 people dead. India says the attacks were carried out by the Laskhar-e-Toiba terror group based in Pakistan.

Praising Azmi, special prosecutor in the Mumbai attack case Ujjwal Nikam told the Times of India: "It is a very unfortunate incident. He was an upcoming lawyer and very polite in court."
