Congress May Probe Leaked Global Warming E-Mails

by Declan McCullagh

(CBS News) - A few days after leaked e-mail messages appeared on the Internet, the U.S. Congress may probe whether prominent scientists who are advocates of global warming theories misrepresented the truth about climate change.

Sen. James Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican, said on Monday the leaked correspondence suggested researchers "cooked the science to make this thing look as if the science was settled, when all the time of course we knew it was not," according to a transcript of a radio interview posted on his Web site. Aides for Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican, are also looking into the disclosure.

The leaked documents (see our previous coverage) come from the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia in eastern England. In global warming circles, the CRU wields outsize influence: it claims the world's largest temperature data set, and its work and mathematical models were incorporated into the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2007 report. That report, in turn, is what the Environmental Protection Agency acknowledged it "relies on most heavily" when concluding that carbon dioxide emissions endanger public health and should be regulated.

Last week's leaked e-mails range from innocuous to embarrassing and, critics believe, scandalous. They show that some of the field's most prominent scientists were so wedded to theories of man-made global warming that they ridiculed dissenters who asked for copies of their data ("have to respond to more crap criticisms from the idiots"), cheered the deaths of skeptical journalists, and plotted how to keep researchers who reached different conclusions from publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

One e-mail message, apparently from CRU director Phil Jones, references the U.K.'s Freedom of Information Act when asking another researcher to delete correspondence that might be disclosed in response to public records law: "Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4? Keith will do likewise." Another, also apparently from Jones: global warming skeptics "have been after the CRU station data for years. If they ever hear there is a Freedom of Information Act now in the UK, I think I'll delete the file rather than send to anyone." (Jones was a contributing author to the chapter of the U.N.'s IPCC report titled "Detection of Climate Change and Attribution of Causes.")

In addition to e-mail messages, the roughly 3,600 leaked documents posted on sites including Wikileaks.org and EastAngliaEmails.com include computer code and a description of how an unfortunate programmer named "Harry" -- possibly the CRU's Ian "Harry" Harris -- was tasked with resuscitating and updating a key temperature database that proved to be problematic. Some excerpts from what appear to be his notes, emphasis added:
I am seriously worried that our flagship gridded data product is produced by Delaunay triangulation - apparently linear as well. As far as I can see, this renders the station counts totally meaningless. It also means that we cannot say exactly how the gridded data is arrived at from a statistical perspective - since we're using an off-the-shelf product that isn't documented sufficiently to say that. Why this wasn't coded up in Fortran I don't know - time pressures perhaps? Was too much effort expended on homogenisation, that there wasn't enough time to write a gridding procedure? Of course, it's too late for me to fix it too. Meh.

I am very sorry to report that the rest of the databases seem to be in nearly as poor a state as Australia was. There are hundreds if not thousands of pairs of dummy stations, one with no WMO and one with, usually overlapping and with the same station name and very similar coordinates. I know it could be old and new stations, but why such large overlaps if that's the case? Aarrggghhh! There truly is no end in sight... So, we can have a proper result, but only by including a load of garbage!

One thing that's unsettling is that many of the assigned WMo codes for Canadian stations do not return any hits with a web search. Usually the country's met office, or at least the Weather Underground, show up – but for these stations, nothing at all. Makes me wonder if these are long-discontinued, or were even invented somewhere other than Canada!

Knowing how long it takes to debug this suite - the experiment endeth here. The option (like all the anomdtb options) is totally undocumented so we'll never know what we lost. 22. Right, time to stop pussyfooting around the niceties of Tim's labyrinthine software suites - let's have a go at producing CRU TS 3.0! since failing to do that will be the definitive failure of the entire project.

Ulp! I am seriously close to giving up, again. The history of this is so complex that I can't get far enough into it before by head hurts and I have to stop. Each parameter has a tortuous history of manual and semi-automated interventions that I simply cannot just go back to early versions and run the update prog. I could be throwing away all kinds of corrections - to lat/lons, to WMOs (yes!), and more. So what the hell can I do about all these duplicate stations?...
As the leaked messages, and especially the HARRY_READ_ME.txt file, found their way around technical circles, two things happened: first, programmers unaffiliated with East Anglia started taking a close look at the quality of the CRU's code, and second, they began to feel sympathetic for anyone who had to spend three years (including working weekends) trying to make sense of code that appeared to be undocumented and buggy, while representing the core of CRU's climate model.

One programmer highlighted the error of relying on computer code that, if it generates an error message, continues as if nothing untoward ever occurred. Another debugged the code by pointing out why the output of a calculation that should always generate a positive number was incorrectly generating a negative one. A third concluded: "I feel for this guy. He's obviously spent years trying to get data from undocumented and completely messy sources."

Programmer-written comments inserted into CRU's Fortran code have drawn fire as well. The file briffa_sep98_d.pro says: "Apply a VERY ARTIFICAL correction for decline!!" and "APPLY ARTIFICIAL CORRECTION." Another, quantify_tsdcal.pro, says: "Low pass filtering at century and longer time scales never gets rid of the trend - so eventually I start to scale down the 120-yr low pass time series to mimic the effect of removing/adding longer time scales!"

It's not clear how the files were leaked. One theory says that a malicious hacker slipped into East Anglia's network and snatched thousands of documents. Another says that the files had already been assembled in response to a Freedom of Information request and, immediately after it was denied, a whistleblower decided to disclose them. (Lending credence to that theory is the fact that no personal e-mail messages unrelated to climate change appear to have been leaked.)

For its part, the University of East Anglia has posted a statement calling the disclosure "mischievous" and saying it is aiding the police in an investigation.

The statement also quotes Jones, CRU's director, explaining his November 1999 e-mail, which said: "I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline." Jones said that the word trick was used "colloquially as in a clever thing to do" and that it "is ludicrous to suggest that it refers to anything untoward."

Also unclear is the ultimate impact of the leak, which came before next month's Copenhagen summit and Democratic plans for cap and trade legislation.

On one hand, over at RealClimate.org, Gavin Schmidt, a modeler for the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, has been downplaying the leak. Schmidt wrote: "There is no evidence of any worldwide conspiracy, no mention of George Soros nefariously funding climate research ... no admission that global warming is a hoax, no evidence of the falsifying of data, and no 'marching orders' from our socialist/communist/vegetarian overlords."

On the other, groups like the free-market Competitive Enterprise Institute, the target of repeated derision in the leaked e-mails, have said: "We have argued for many years that much of the scientific case for global warming alarmism was weak and some of it was phony. It now looks like a lot of it may be phony."

ScienceMag.org published an article noting that deleting e-mail messages to hide them from a FOI request is a crime in the United Kingdom. George Monbiot, a U.K. activist and journalist who previously called for dramatic action to deal with global warming, wrote: "It's no use pretending that this isn't a major blow. The emails extracted by a hacker from the climatic research unit at the University of East Anglia could scarcely be more damaging."

Complicating matters for congressional Republicans who'd like to hold hearings is that East Anglia, of course, is a U.K. university. The GOP may intend to press the Obama administration for details on how the EPA came to rely on the CRU's predictions, and whether the recent disclosure will change the agency's position. Another approach lies in e-mail messages discussing grants from the U.S. Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to East Anglia; one says: "We need to show some left to cover the costs of the trip Roger didn't make and also the fees/equipment/computer money we haven't spent otherwise NOAA will be suspicious."

The irony of this situation is that most of us expect science to be conducted in the open, without unpublished secret data, hidden agendas, and computer programs of dubious reliability. East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit might have avoided this snafu by publicly disclosing as much as possible at every step of the way.

Welcome to the land of psyops and well I am here, hi to the cia over at prisonplanet.

Notice how this broke synchronously in the AI media, the internet, throughout officialdom?

If you listen to alex jones, the same childish voice as one of those fake 9/11 witnesses that explained how and why the building collapsed when it had just happened. Why? It is essential to keep people stupid.

When I was a kid you had name and religion on your passport. At school you are trained to answer to your name, controlled through your name, as if your name sat over you rather that being a subordinate construct that you didn't even choose. It is turned backwards, for politics it is essential as obediance to authority requires that you believe people are above you. It is a con, the legal system is built on that con.

Religion as of course that name has to be attached to a group, any group will do, religion, football team, political party, as long you accept groupthink (don't do your own thinking - busted child state ie institutionallised adult).

News?

Utter nonsense, this is pathetic chickenfeed even for counter intelligence agencies like the cia. When truth has to come out it comes out typically from truth capture sites. The BBC and Daily Mail, two of the biggest liars on the planet are used to release truth. Sometimes the truth has to be told more quietly than locally and historically I noticed quieter exposures being past off to the CBC in canada, same company just different location.

CBC in canada released the scam, multiple sets of raw data, scientists objecting that their names were used for official reports as endorsement when they did not agree with the nonsense the public were given.

There are fake scientists, guardians are planted throughout the system and in britain fake science is normal as the invisible college is all over the place here. To run a secret society, what people believe is real but isn't means fooling everyone.

How does it really work? To give an example, a bunch of freemasons went out to washington to give the orders there to censor the internet (first they give things to people and then they take them back to control through them, the internet always being a military grid, the public one being the small one). It all looks normal to the public as it was a secret society in uniform what the public would think of as police.

To simplify the story, jumping to recent times, senior officials of interpol (soca in the uk, fbi in america) were saying 1 in 5 children were victims of child abuse on the internet. The child is the most potent propaganda, fools people all the time as it switches on emotions and switches off thinking.

It took me some time but I tracked down the report. It was government funded, sent to an american university to do and they used the police agencies for statistics. The report was authentic, there were just two twists to it, the parameters of the report were designed for the political agenda. One sentence was built for offical use in the US and UK which then instructed the world though the boss is in neither of those nations. 1 in 5, magic numbers are used as nice and memorable as they are drummed into you.

The report was neutral, part of it included that 1 in 5 children questioned who were on the net had received adult solicitations, this included such things as spam.

At the time big pharma (same company) were spamming the entire internet with sexual enhancement drugs. From memory 70% of the teenagers said they didn't mind the email though most people find spam a nuisance.

In other words, the academic report was honest, the framing of the research and the way a sentence was built from it for media use was the con. The report wasn't cheap but that doesn't matter as that is charged to the public, they have to pay for their own brainwashing so politics wins again.

It is a close loop system (all the same company society included, society especially) but of particular importance is how I mean the word public, I mean everyone no matter whether they are in state or out of it. What a war these things create whilst nearly everyone is completely fooled. While everyone is fighting the dictator has some peace whilst the secret societies plan the next war.

Money is a fiction well covered so perhaps more useful to look at what is being done and why. Wholesale deconstruction is in progress, the role of the communist intelligence agency as insiders call it is to look after the company (which includes society), at this time to deconstruct it all to build a new police state.

Counter intelligence agencies tend to have the lead on people though the internet backfired as have attempts to censor it . They like to sit on the truth before people get there. By design it is a prison planet, this is achieved substantially through information warfare, infowars and prisonplanet presented as truth sites when Mr Jones has a very effective memory so to claim this is big news when he knows how constructs and counter intelligence works presents a contradiction.

A british lord is in on this act, former advisor to thatcher he says, someone who had an image as a nationalist whilst together with her husband was looting the nation wholesale, selling it all off.

This story helps group people up, a counter a group, an anti group, so they are all in group minds and do the deconstruction themselves believing it is the right thing to do. Groupthink cannot be right as to do the right thing means you must intend it not surrender your mind to a group. Democracy, mob rule, this works on very similar lines as if you create and control the group that is a great deal of power at your disposal except that group has gone, government is stuck with all the cons of history it is frightened to admit to so history converges to tragedy unless people think, unless people stop looking for enemies when the big enemy is our own minds for society is designed to have everyone fighting each other and cannot go on working. State accumulates errors through denial, one exception I found was a kennedy speach, I call it the fatal speech and he spoke of burying errors, he tried to explain the real truth of it all, murderous mayhem. The media blocked him followed by a hail of gunfire. I don't know of any other puppets presidents but the kennedies who broke free.

When there are sensitive leaks, even hints of them, the gov are sent viciously after the leaker. A secret trial recently, thatcher went after a few as people from inside and retired from inside blew the big whistle on her, illuminated the big lies.

In britain a psyops story has been running over a hacker. Prisonplanet asks for more hacking whilst pointing to criminals in gov, a contradiction right there. The hacker in britain is over a chap who is supposedly being extradited to america for breaking into a military database and seeing stuff on aliens, the AI media keeps showing stuff on aliens. The whole story a blatant piece of psyops and I would be surprised if a fake alien invasion would be attempted because it would reveal technologies which could benefit the public revealing the con of the entire show here on earth. I include that as if someone hacks and embarrasses government they are attacked, shoot the messenger is politics, yet this time a full reverse. Wouldn't alex jones notice that?

The big story and big evidence is out on this, was outed years ago, officially conceded and people who want to know can check. This is utter puff, utter utter puff, that too people can check. This story is supposed to hack the human mind, want to jump on the bandwagon knowing it is built out of straw?

They are saying in british news at the moment about an enquiry into wmd and iraq. That issue was officially disclosed by the US DOD, the whole story a con, wmd were supplied, to iran not iraq as it happens. (run both sides in the war, the age old con, state vs people as if we didn't notice we are all people).

I don't agree, the story has nothing to do with AJ, it was broken by climate bloggers because someone posted it in their comments section and people read it and broke the story. It is a massive story, the biggest I've seen in 6 years and the most powerful in terms of bringing down the establishment and stopping the carbon dictatorship. No way it came from officialdom, CNN is the biggest news website by far and it had not even mentioned it as of 2 days ago, this is as real as it gets, the fake scientists panicked right after the story broke and slipped up by admitting the emails were real. They are trying to do a Bilderberg style blackout on the story and it is failing miserably.

193200 I hope they do a better investigation of this than they did into 9/11. ( sorry i mean cover up, did i say investigation? silly me ) Youd have to have the cognitive process of an infant to think these emails are of much significance, if theres a story here.. where is it? what is it?

they lied? they manipulated data? well.. i guess that means that every climatologist on the planet is on on this mass conspiracy, because whats the use of passing on statistics that can easily be proven wrong once theyre released?

there have been scientists all along saying that global warming was total BS. anyone could have looked to the research themselves and found the conclusions don't match the evidence presented in the majority of those papers. anyone could have followed the money to see who it was that paid for the studies. ANYONE. but nobody did that, did they? the truth was getting out anyway, so in attempt to control the information, this story was manufactured! this story is straight-up psyops no matter how you cut it.

so they deconstruct Al Gore and his global warming. no big deal. he was a pawn, or maybe a bishop, but it's nothing to sacrifice even the big players. he can be (and likely already is) replaced. they are tearing down the whole system. government is being deconstructed right now, in our very lifetimes. but if you look at history, you see that this isn't anything new.

a system of control (such as what people might call "civilization") is inherently unstable. it has to be torn down and another built to replace it periodically. plato explained this in the republic, you know. you don't want to admit it, but you know. you know that revolutions are staged to prevent any changes from really happening. you know nothing has changed in thousands of years. war is still being waged against all of humanity, and governments still exist, and nobody is free. you know that this is what is happening right now. and you know that if you join the group, the cause, and fight some other group, that will prevent freedom from being real. that is exactly what we have been programmed to do, and it's hard to break free. but it isn't impossible. we can break free. we don't have to rebuild society using the same flawed system as before. we all know that, too. but we are too afraid to leave the little boxes we have lived our entire lives in, because we have been taught not to look outside, we have been taught to fear freedom, and embrace all sorts of lies that support a corrupt system of abuse and power and control.
