Phoenix police raid home of blogger whose writing is highly critical of them

By Carlos Miller, Photography is Not a Crime

In what should send a frightening chill down the spine of every blogger, writer, journalist and First Amendment advocate in the United States, Phoenix police raided the home of a blogger who has been highly critical of the department.

Jeff Pataky, who runs Bad Phoenix Cops, said the officers confiscated three computers, routers, modems, hard drives, memory cards and everything necessary to continue blogging.

The 41-year-old software engineer said they also confiscated numerous personal files and documents relating to a pending lawsuit he has against the department alleging harassment - which he says makes it obvious the raid was an act of retaliation.

Maricopa County Judge Gary Donahoe signed the search warrant that allowed at least ten cops to raid his home in North Phoenix on March 12 while handcuffing his female roommate for three hours as they tore the place apart.

Pataky, who was out of town on a business trip during the raid, also believes police were retaliating against him for the content of his blog, much of it which comes from inside sources within the department.

“They broke into my safe and took the backups of my backups,” he said in a phone interview with Photography is Not a Crime on Wednesday.

“I can’t even file my taxes because all my business plans are gone. They took everything.”

The search warrant lists “petty theft” and “computer tampering with the intent to harass” as probable causes. He has yet to see an actual affidavit that lists in detail the probable cause and is skeptical that one even exists.

“They say everything has been sealed,” he said.

The conflict between Pataky and the Phoenix Police Department began two years ago during “a nasty divorce” after moving out of the house he had shared with his wife. His said she was not taking the divorce too well and began filing false allegations against him accusing him of stalking and harassing her.

Many of the reports she filed accused him of doing things when he was out of town, he said.

So he began filing complaints with everybody from Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon down to Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris to no avail. He was eventually indicted for harassing his ex-wife.

A month before the trial, he and a few friends launched the website as a rant against the police department. When he went to trial in May 2008, his charges were immediately dismissed because of lack of evidence, he said.

“We were going to shut down the website after that but then all of a sudden all these good cops started hitting the site and sending us tips,” he said.

He said they would also deliver all kinds of internal documents from within the department exposing everything from a cop with multiple DUIs to another cop whose son was a child molester and was trying to get on the force (and was eventually arrested).

“We have about 50 to 100 retired and active cops who provide us information,” he said.

Police apparently believe one of the tipsters is an officer named David Barnes, who fell out of favor with the department in 2007 when he was a detective and went public with claims of mismanaged evidence at the city crime lab.

Police also raided Barnes’ home and according to Pataky’s inside sources, plan to raid the homes of more cops.

Police have been extremely vague about the nature of the raids, according to the arizona republic.

Police officials said Wednesday that a Phoenix detective prompted the investigation after complaining about harassment, though they declined further comment…

Phoenix Assistant Chief Andy Anderson said the harassment case is unique because of the connection to an unaccredited grassroots Web site. He said the blog is one part of the case, though he did not provide specifics of the ongoing investigation.

“This isn’t about the blog,” Anderson said. “That’s just where the investigation led.”

The allegation of “petty theft” against Pataky stem from photos he posted on his blog of police name plates that appear to have been taken from within the department. He said he actually made the plates himself.

The allegation of “computer tampering with the intent to harass” obviously has to do with his no holds barred criticism of the department.

Pataky, who has since purchased a new laptop, is taking the raid in stride and has added it to the allegations in his pending lawsuit.

And he has not let it stop him from blogging.

“They thought they were going to scare us into a corner but they just made us stronger.”

I read the first paragraph as you are not safe and the second that your data is not safe. These things do happen, a case is in the 'high court' this week of exactly that nature against what the public know as the police in britain. Oppression conquers by the silence it creates. Hence the saying 'speak now or forever hold your peace'.

There is a saying about the thin blue line, something about the world being only one day away from anarchy. Contrary to the perception that has been given to people, the true meaning of anarchy is what people understand as freedom, making their own choices, own decisions, being responsible for their own lives.

In america the private debt is contracted to the crown by the constitution, they claim (the house of cards is built on bluff) it would be trespass if the public were to call operatives of the company to account. The company's police force are in the front line in a perpetual war against not just people but against freedom itself.

The freemasons are a control of the 'police', indeed people of influence to prevent free will and they operate on the 'order out of chaos' principle, their order and the world's chaos. If the banking system or other parts of the survival machinery were pulled in one tug, there would be mayhem for a time, but looting of shops and such panic measures are unsustainable, short term discomforts compared to the centuries of war that there has been.

Anarchy is very different, people who take responsibility for their own lives would by definition be caring of others. Frictions are useful to 'order out of chaos', the us and them. If the virtual psychopath system is removed from our minds (heirarchy) we are all public and there is no us and them.

<“They thought they were going to scare us into a corner but they just made us stronger.”>

This they know and there are some very nervous people around right now. A police state is built through momentum, in the most extreme case the shock and awe tactics but against an increasingly informed populous some men in black in arizona have the most to think about.

70178 It will take the people fighting back on the same level with the same firepower to defeat the police state. Peaceful demos are shit and are a thing of the past.

<It will take the people fighting back on the same level with the same firepower to defeat the police state.>

In britain they tried it a few years back, tavistock leading the assault (on people's minds), being fed out through RIIA units to other parts of the world. It took a core of 5 people to put pay to that program.

What was different than germany when this time they had television, far more military technology and experience. A key difference was the internet.

People can be manipulated if they don't know what the underlying motives are. Normally the media repetitively pumps out some nonsense and whole populations end up discussing the nonsense not realising instead of thinking they were throwing up thought substitutes. This has changed.

They say the first casualty of war is truth. That is policy but a policy that has failed catastrophically and truth is out. There are plenty of wars but the hoax of them is out there, the truth of them is out there.

Whilst obama is continuing that war he does so facing evidenced allegations of treason.

2468 Watch the UK today. Should be interesting. That cop and his suckerpunch and subsequent attempt at coverup will not be ignored. Folks are rightfully pissed off. A comeuppance for the fascists is in the cards. A tipping point for sure.

7970 william walace (sic). "peaceful demos are shit and a thing of the past".

Hate to let history get the way of a good soundbite but peacful demonstration is comparatively modern and has had amazing results: the promoting civil liberties in the US, its role in ending apartied in SA, the ousting of the British from India, the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I live in London and just endured the G20, I go out into the protests and these are my people, sadly some of my people (like you messer walace) are idiots. You smash a window and THAT, not the message, becomes the story, those PR guys may be sucking on the babylonian teet but they know their stuff. The UK has phenomenal capacity for change, we have been through feudalism, indutrialisation, socailism, capitalism, thatcherism (as many isms as you want), we saw an end to sex discrimination, an end to slavery, an end to effective monarchy, all without violent revolution, and speeking as a Brit that is a source of enourmous pride for us. People smashing up RBS lose more ground than they gain with the public.

People, like you, who crave violence are the worst this world has to offer. violence by its nature is indiscriminate, Mr Thomlinson (who tragically died at G20) was not a protester, he was not a member of a nebulous 'elite'; he was an ordinary guy with those whom he loved and who loved him. Violence is indiscriminate.

As Cicero (a clever chap by most accounts and a man who understood freedom better than most) said: "war is only loved by those who have never experienced it".

william walace: grow up.

72177 I recently lost my security clearance because the American government deemed my blog a national security risk. Blog at your own risk

2468 In North Am one can fall from grace in a heartbeat. I spent years and a personal fortune earning my pilots wings. I even got to give air cadets a plane ride just as I recieved when I was in cadets. Suddenly no job, a fire at my house, and poof I became a welfare case having my every move scrutinized. I did not suffer that well and told an awful number of gov't and police types to fuck right off. Wouldn't be surprised to find myself on the no fly list. Oh well its becoming well documented that the US and Canadian establishment are the true "security risks" in this world. Compy with their B.S. at your own risk.

9211 I was in London for the G20 and a friend of mine was working security for the banks and so had a birds eye view of the whole thing. The RBS building was the only one not to have been boarded up and the police literally herded the protestors to those windows. The staff inside had already been told not to turn up for work that day and sent to other offices and banks in the city and it was the only bank with no on site private security. Several well placed "agitators" started the window assault and the police, who had thrown a ring of steel around the Bank of England next door, stood off and allowed them to smash their way into the bank and start throwing furniture and equipment out, even though they had a 20 plus-strong team of horses right there stood by and allowed it to happen. Only when enough media coverage had been allowed (to detract from the real protests happening all over London that day) did the horses move in and disperse the crowd. The whole thing was totally stage managed by the police in concert with the bank itself.

Sorry to rain on your parade Mr Wallace but it is your approach that ruins the movement as it is all to easy to subvert. "They'll never take our freedom" may be your warcry, but your actions allow them to introduce more and more draconian laws in the name of "civil unrest" to do exactly that!

98207 The article was interesting and revealing. Cops lie, cheat and abuse their power and 99% of the time they get away with it. I am a professional woman and while going through divorce, I ended up getting abused by the cops that I had called for help. (my x was stalking me) This turned into multiple false arrests with the Santa Rosa Police, ( 3 times in 92' and 3 times in 95) They, 3 cops, crawled through a window and pulled me out of my shower in 95. I am an educated woman and I grew up in a family that had NO CONTACT WITH COPS OR COP CULTURE. This horrific ongoing ordeal, (I took them to federal and state court) has forever severed me from my life as I knew it. Also, anyone that experiences cop abuse gets isolated from normal social and work relationships. I appreciate hearing other peoples experiences. thanks

76253 We have police because of a Police Action. We have been conquered by the Federal government. The police are the military occupation without a formal declarations of hostilities.
Orwell called them the boot in the face of humanity forever.
What are you going to do about those boys in black. In military parlance a black uniform proclaims the color of their soul. See the Waffen SS, Chinese and Russian cops too. All over the World.
Fascism is the only game in town.

7182 I do not trust police anymore. We no longer have any constutional rights as citizens of the U.S. Following an incident with my daughter and the GVSU DPS I will NEVER support any police again. They had better never call for any fundraising effort and I will vote against any pay raises to benefit them. This is a big risk to even use my percieved 'freedom of speech' since we no longer have any rights. They are all dishonest and are not the friendly police I was taught to respect as a child. I learned the hard way that police are NOT your friend and only want to hurt you. A young lady on GVSU campus was getting stabbed with a knife while the GVSU DPS did nothing. Meanwhile they were covering the peep-hole on my daughter's dorm door covertly so they could try and search her appartment.
I will NEVER EVER support any police fund raisers and will actively vote to reduce or eliminate their incomes.Police are no longer necessary in civilized society. Just let us have our right to bear arms and we can take care of ourselves.
I raised my children to support and respect police. Now I tell them to question and doubt them and NEVER trust them. My home will probably get raided because I wrote this. I would have more rights if I lived in communist China. At least there I would know the rules of the game and wouldn't think I had rights.
For those not yet impacted by police corruption, beware you are next!
Military state(can't say)

7182 Don't trust these military police who shoot 'roids' and feel angy.

GVSU DPS are cowards with badges and unlike the propaganda they don't care about your safety. It's all about bringing in money and targeting those who the steriod-cop feels are guilty.

The GVSU DPS will harass your young-adult and try to send them to jail. If you don't believe me you should send them to this Nazi school and find out for yourself. As a parent I got to experience this first hand with a young-adult who never ever stole, or broke any laws.
