China clinic gives 'web addicts' shock treatment

By David Edwards and Muriel Kane

Increasing affluence in China, combined with intense pressure on young people to succeed, has led to the appearance of large numbers of Internet dropouts.

Most of those affected are adolescent males who, according to IBN Live, lack self-confidence and have trouble coping with the pressure from their parents to do well at school, "which is why computer games, where success comes with such little effort, are so addictive."

There are many clinics offering cures, but the Internet Addiction Treatment Center in Daxing County, which combines military-style discipline with therapy and even low-voltage electric shocks, claims a particularly high success rate of 70%.

However, even the Daxing center has difficulty with the other 30% of referrals, who are often severely depressed and resistant to counseling. "Their souls are gone to the online world," said one psychologist.

Chinese officials estimate that 13% of Internet users under the age of 18 are addicts. There is little consensus in the West on whether Internet addition is real or how it should be defined, but the Chinese have no hesitation in comparing it with drugs and gambling and blame it for murders, suicides, and much juvenile crime. When one 30 year old man died of exhaustion earlier this year after playing online games for three straight days, Shanghai police began enforcing an age limit of 16 at all Internet cafes.

Korea, often described as the most wired country on earth, has also embraced the Chinese definition of Internet addiction and estimates that up to 30% of its own young people are at risk. Korea recently opened its first boot camp on the Chinese model, the Jump Up Internet Rescue School.

2421 Any activity a human can partake in can become addictive. It can therefore become a problem if it interferes with ones well being.

I hate to say it, but it started with rubbing 2 sticks together and has progressively worsened from there. I figure TV, cell phones and internetMMO's are the worst as far as the tech addictions go...

Let's face it. Using technology responsibly is not something the average human is capable of doing. Course, using ANYTHING responsibly is not something the average human is capable of doing.

It'll prolly be a kitchen sponge that triggers the next fall of humanity.

Better luck next time.

199126 This is alarming, but no more alarming than the other human-rights abuses China so liberally dispenses. The internet has always been a target for them because it is an unrestricted portal to information, and information is dangerous to an oppressive government. What really worries me is that China will be a much larger world player soon, as their economy matures. How soon will their society mature along with it? How long will the Chinese people put up with this nonsense?

24180 The problem is, this is CHINA. They are probably using this to brainwash dissidents who are forced to use the internet as their voice because of the millitary state.

12478 China is more free than any western country I have ever been in. As for as censoring the web its easily gotten around. The Chinese addicts they are talking about are not searching information, they are playing gams like W.O.W. or MU or conter strike, and playing them for days on end eating nothing but instant noodles and water and smoking 2 to 3 packs of cigarettes a day. It is a very serious problem, much like obesity in America, do you attack the American government for trying to give students healthier foods?

90201 So the luddites are persecuting the forward thinkers again by saying that their souls are in danger from doing something they like which doesn`t hurt anyone else?

When will they just leave people alone to enjoy life in whatever way they prefer (unless those actions hurt others) EVEN IF THEY WOULDN`T ENJOY LIVING LIFE THAT WAY THEMSELVES

I mean really what is the real problem here? "my son/daughter isn`t living up to the life I had planned for them"

24180 124:78- If it involves using electroshock and other brainwashing techniques as "therapy", then yes.

Please note: InformationLiberation is neither liberal or conservative. When one takes the time to research the "liberal elite," whom the conservatives oppose, and the "conservative elite," whom the liberals oppose, one finds both "elite" are one and the same. "Liberal" or "Conservative" is not a substantive choice, it is only the carefully crafted illusion of a choice, for both parties come together when they are instructed to.

"The real truth of the matter is, as you and I know, that a financial element in the larger centers has owned the Government ever since the days of Andrew Jackson."
A letter written by FDR to Colonel House, November 21st, 1933

"Fifty men have run America, and that's a high figure."
Joseph Kennedy, father of JFK, in the July 26th, 1936 issue of The New York Times.

If you care to know who runs the world you live in, view these films. If you care not then I leave you with this quote to ponder:

"There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution."
