Monsanto Goes GMO-Free - in its Cafeteria

UNITED KINGDOM. From now on, staff at the British headquarters of biotech giant Monsanto will be eating only non-genetically modified products on their lunch breaks. Foods containing genetically modified soy and corn are no longer available in the company cafeteria. Granada Food Services, which manages the canteen, is said to be concerned about health risks. Monsanto's press department contends the action was not the result of a boycott initiated by worried employees of theU.S. multinational.

6269 Dear Sir,
I was so interested in this story that I contacted Monsanto and was assured that they do not have a cafeteria so they could hardly have a policy of avoiding GM foods.
We need to keep the credibility of your website in tact and I would therefore suggest that you publish a retraction to this statement unless you have evidence to the contrary.

Yours faithfully.

In another blow to its ability to repair the credibility of genetically engineered (GE) food, in December Monsanto admitted that GE food is banned from the cafeteria at the company's UK headquarters in High Wycombe. Company officials say the decision was made by its caterer, without soliciting input from Monsanto's employees.

Granada Food Services, whose customers include Monsanto's High Wycombe headquarters office, issued a statement which said the move was designed to "ensure that you, the customer, can feel confident in the food we serve."

A letter from Sutcliffe Catering, which is responsible for the food service at other Monsanto offices in Britain, states: "In response to concern raised by our customers over the use of GMFs [genetically modified foods], and to comply with government legislation we have taken the decision to remove, as far as is practicable, GM soya and maize from all food products served in our restaurant." The UK government has applied an EU law on labeling retail GM foods to caterers and restaurants.

At another UK Monsanto restaurant, GM foods have not been entirely removed. "We believe in choice," says Tony Combes, Monsanto UK's director of corporate affairs. "This is why at our Cambridge restaurant the statutory notice which complies with the law says ‘some foods may contain GMOs' as our staff are happy to eat foods which have been sprayed with less chemicals."

Monsanto eatery bans altered food

LONDON (AP) -- Genetically modified food has been banned from the staff cafeteria at Monsanto Co.'s UK headquarters by the company's own caterer, Monsanto confirmed Tuesday. Granada Food Services, whose customers include Monsanto's High Wycombe office near London, recently told clients it would not supply food containing genetically modified soya or maize due to customer concerns.

In a statement to clients, Granada said the move was designed "to ensure that you, the customer, can feel confident in the food we serve." Genetic engineering involves splicing a single gene from one organism to another. Genetically modified products, including Monsanto's genetically engineered corn, have recently met with safety concerns in parts of Europe and Asia.

In October, the European Union adopted new marketing rules requiring companies to label food as genetically modified if more than one percent of the product contains genetically modified organisms. Granada's statement said the ban also brings the company into compliance with the new regulations.

Monsanto played down the staff cafeteria policy, and denied it was an embarrassment to have a genetically modified food ban at the head office of a company manufacturing genetically modified crop seeds. "We believe in choice. At our Cambridge restaurant the notice says some products may contain genetically modified organisms because our staff are happy to eat foods sprayed with fewer chemicals," said Tony Combes, Monsanto's director of corporate affairs. Combes also pointed out that Granada's ban was a blanket ban covering all of its customers and did not target Monsanto specifically."It has nothing to do with us really," said Combes.

Opponents of genetically modified food said they believe the ban showed a lack of confidence in Monsanto, however. "The public has made its concerns about GM ingredients very clear. Now it appears that even Monsanto's own catering firm has no confidence in this new technology," said Adrian Bebb, food campaigner at Friends of the Earth.

If you care to know who runs the world you live in, view these films. If you care not then I leave you with this quote to ponder:

"There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution."
