Lawyer Ends Up Dead After Taking On Rove

Kurt Nimmo

It's fishy as hell.

Paul Sanford, a prominent Aptos, California, attorney, who accused Karl Rove of treason in the Plame outing case, took a leap from the Embassy Suites Hotel in Monterey Bay on Christmas Eve. Police describe it as "probable" suicide, even though it appears Sanford was not depressed.

"Friends and associates expressed disbelief at the news of Sanford's death and that it was ruled a suicide, saying Sanford seemed happy and had made many plans for this week and in coming months. [Business associate and friend Shawn Mills] said he and Sanford recently decided to open a shared law office to serve Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, something Sanford was looking forward to doing," reports the Monterey Herald. "Mills said he had spoken to Sanford's wife, Paula, and that she also was in shock. He said Sanford, a father of two, was a devoted family man." Sanford "would never have intentionally put his family through that trauma. Something's not right, it doesn't make sense."

On July 25, 2005, in the James S. Brady Briefing Room at the White House, Sanford asked then press secretary Scott McClellan about Karl Rove, accused at the time by Joseph Wilson, the husband of Valerie Plame, of outing his wife as a CIA employee in retaliation for Wilson's op-ed published in the New York Times. Wilson criticized the citation of bogus yellowcake documents used as flimsy justification for invading Iraq and murdering more than 650,000 Iraqis.

McClellan was flummoxed by Sanford's question:
McClellan: Go ahead.

Sanford: Yes, thank you. There has been a lot of speculation concerning the meaning of the underlying statute and the grand jury investigation concerning Mr. Rove. The question is, have the legal counsel to the White House or White House staff reviewed the statute in sufficient specificity to determine whether a violation of that statute would, in effect, constitute treason?

McClellan: I think that in terms of decisions regarding the investigation, those are matters for those overseeing the investigation to decide.
Special counsel, Patrick Fitzgerald, decided not to charge Rove in the case, even though the former Donald Segretti dirty trickster understudy raised enough suspicion to warrant being called before a grand jury five times. Neocon Lewis "Scooter" Libby was charged with obstruction of justice, perjury, and making false statements to the FBI. A few weeks later, on July 13, 2006, Joseph and Valerie Wilson filed a civil suit against Cheney, Libby, Rove, and other unnamed senior White House officials, for their alleged roles in the public disclosure of her classified CIA employment.

In addition, Sanford was "a champion of the downtrodden, he represented homeless people in Santa Cruz, and fought for free speech," according to Mills. As well, he hosted a radio talk show at KOMY, an Air America affiliate, although he was not associated with the bankrupt network. Sanford and Mills also hosted the "Paul and Shawn Show" on Saturdays at the Seaside, California, radio station KRXA.

Of course, there is no evidence Paul Sanford was pushed from "at least nine floors" above the large ventilation grate where he met his fate. As well, there is no evidence he committed suicide, or did he fit the profile of a suicide. However, there is plenty of evidence Sanford was a thorn in the side of the neocons, committing the ultimate sin of accusing one particularly nasty top drawer neocon, Karl Rove, of treason.

6879 Seriously... you're a conspiracy theory moron.

This guy didn't "take on rove," he just asked if the charges already leveled against him could constitute treason.

Oh, he wasn't depressed? His family and friends are baffled because he seemed so happy? Must be a conspiracy because, as we all know, family members and friends of "legitimate" suicides ALWAYS see it coming right?

I see you also forgot to include the bit from the original story about the group of housekeepers who saw him on the 9th floor, pacing back and forth, ALONE, right before the incident.

Paranoid, irrational people like you give all of us Democrats a bad name. You'd do me more good by coming with paranoid theories like this for the Repubs.

Unbelievable.

24159 Just like Vince Foster committed suicide too right ? He wasn't shot in the head by Hillary Clinton then taken and dumped into the park late at night .... I am sorry but the ruthless are just that ruthless and no one ever seems to be able to stop them. Lets also look at all the plane crashes during the Clinton reign ... I know that quite a few of those flights has some senior official or person from the white house on them ... kind of interesting don't you think ... lets kill a plane full of people to keep one person quiet ... make it look like a random accident ..... but when you add them all up ... it gets a little spookey.... interesting that the number of plane crashes in the last 6 years is very low compared to when clinton was in office .... hows that for a conspiracy theory :)

67150 Conspiracy Theory Consideration?

Was attorney Paul Sanford's suicide leap motivated by personal psychological or chronic medical or health factors or by an acute, crisis situation, whether psychological, interpersonal, financial or physical, etc.? Circa the year 2005 a noted comdian was found dead in the snow, some distance from his home, with one of his wrists slashed, somewhere on the east coast of the U.S., I believe in Vermont, and a noted white Californian jazz singer leaped to her death also from a window, to the best of my recall, of a hotel in New York circa 2001. Both deaths were ruled suicides by coroners. A close associate of the jazz singer remarked in a radio-show interview about her that she was a depressed person, suffering from extreme pain, who had been in psychotherapy. Nevertheless, I suggest that the deceased attorney's teeth, gums and gum pits, and jaw undergo a scouring examination for normally undetectable cracks or splits in the teeth (especially, the upper and lower molars), even undetectable by most dentists and oral surgeons, and for sudden and incipient abnormalities in the jaw bone and gums and gum pits (especially on the middle sides and in the back). Sudden onset of cracked tooth syndrome, especially with suddenly multiple cracked teeth and jaw and oral soft-tissue inflamation, and associated massive and relentless oral and facial muscle spasms, at an inconvenient time, when and where highly potent pain killer medication is not readily or immediately available, may dispose the strongest willed individual or sufferer to suicide to terminate the intolerable, overwhelming pain. If the suffer survives the sudden initial onset of this condition to see physicians, dentists and oral surgeons, all but the most elite of these may diagnose the suffer's situation as psychological or psychophysical (hypochondriasis, pseudo pain or psychosomatic -- delusional, and hysteria or stress caused). Eventually an extraordinary doctor, if the sufferer survives the chronic remission and re-onset of the condition to see one, will capture with his equipment and superior ability the physical reality and attributes of the illness condition and be able to demonstrate these to the suffer and other relevant doctors for appropriate treatment. However, the suffer may not be able to tolerate the subsequent pain of the recurring chronic condition to avail himself or herself of the services of a talented doctor and may terminate his or her life in frustration and during a recurrence event of the pain-crisis condition. The possibility of external inducement of cracked teeth, etc. (damaged eyes, brains, bones -- clandestine damage to these would be suspect unless there was a past medical record to serve as cover for futher damage), has been indirectly investigated and can be investigated by anyone via the internet under the search subject matter "biotronic or psychotronic weapons (which are futuristic pain-inducing social control devices and apparatus that have been created for police forces and the military and for which stock can be purchased in their manufacturing companies)". Chorus: "They wouldn't do that!"

67150 Addendum to Conspiracy Theory Consideration (comment above)

The word "suffer" throughout the narrative should almost always, if not always, correctly be "sufferer".

207109 This type of unresearched story does no one any good. These unsupported conspiracy theories end up being little more than ammunition for the other side, as they accuse people like you of wearing tin hats. But the problem isn't that you're crazy--it's that you're incredibly sloppy and lazy. Wanna be a reporter? Fine--learn what the job entails. Do the work. THEN write your piece.

207200 First, Paul Sanford jumped from the 9th floor of the hotel. At least, he was seen by the domestic staff of the hotel on that floor. But, there are floors ABOVE the 9th floor (there are pictures of that hotel on a website) and, if you go to a structure to commit suicide, you go TO THE TOP FLOOR. On the other hand, he may have been meeting someone on the 9th floor and walked the corridors, alone, while he waited for that person to appear.

Secondly, Paul Sanford displayed not a single bit of anxiety or depression, usually present with suicide, during the weeks and days before his death. He had a stable marriage, children, a prosperous career, had recently purchased a house on the Monterey peninsula, and he had, according to the newspaper articles following his death, recently made optimistic, enthusiastic, plans regarding his career. He was only 50, in good health, was never known to have had problems with addiction, and not a single friend or acquaintance has stepped forward with news of scandal.

Third, the time and date of his death are significant. Why would a family man, drive an hour away from where he lived, during the morning of Christmas Eve, to kill himself?

67160 Interesting to read the bit about maids seeing him pacing before the 'fall'....So, I "Googled," and read more about this man - the pending law suit (non-Rove related) he was hoping for 'vindication' from, the 2002 questions about fund-raising he was involved in - and I found that there were some reasons he may have been depressed - and since men are not apt to seek help, unfortunately, I do not find his suicide to be farfetched...BUT, I suppose there is always the possiblility that 'the ruthless Rove' could threaten a person's family with harm UNLESS he/she commits suicide? But, it doesn't seem likely here -

One thing IS for certain - karl Rove IS a demon - and it's too bad HE didn't do the leaping....would have been a nice Christmas gift to America. But, then, he is a narcissist, and they don't commit suicide...unfortunately.

76213 Well, i live in Seaside, CA just a few blocks from the Embassy Suites hotel where Mr. Paul Sanford "decided" to end his live.
i have to admit i am a little perplex about the whole thing.
I don't mean to claim to be the greatest detective in the world but i am well rounded person, streetsmart, good with people, speak differents langagues and i did a "little research on my own".
I have acouple of long time friends that works at the Embassy suites. Yes, i watch Columbo, Csi, cold cases and others police Shows on Tv. I've been reading police stories as far i can remember.
Does this make a expert ? You'll be the judge.
So i did go already many times to the Embassy Suites. I've talked to housekeepers in persons. At first, one latino lady on the 12 th floor told me she was working on that day, so her daughter as well.
There is at least 12 housekeepers for the hotel ( one on each floor, at least). They all have the same routine, i was told. They start to clean rooms at 9:00 AM. They start from one corner or the squared floor layout. At that time of the day, the rooms the housekeepers start to clean happen to be right behind one off the elevator doors and shaft (there 2 diagonally opposed elevators). Where you are at the place where the workers would be at anygiven 9:20 Am of anyday, you couldn't look out to the open atrium. The housekeepers have 3 suites to maintain in that particular starting corner of the square lay out. It would take anyone more that 20 minutes to clean those 3 suites before emerging from that corner and able finally to have a clear shot of the atrium.
Then i have another problem with the suicide. The placement of the fire escape stairways in relation with the place Mr Paul SAnford "jump" that happen to be about 3 seconds by walking fast toward it.
According to the housekeeper, She heard a loud " boum" discribe as someone drop a round banquet table on the floor.
It was only after a couple of minutes that finally the front desk agent that went around to do a routine check of the lobby, find the body of Mr. Paul SAnford. This could have give plenty time for someone to use the fire escape for literally " escaping the scene" totally unoticed. Then there the general manager telling everybody that wants to hear him that there no video tape in the hotel.
There are actually video surveillance cameras but nobody bother to check them out ???
Monterey is very old fashion in such a blatant way it is not even funny.
Some one like Mr PauL Sanford coming here a opening a law firm with his kind of crendentials could have been threat for their "everyday of doing bisiness". The area is fertile ground for all kind of military research and "odd balls military characters".
The redistribution of the land primarly used as military base has been splitted to the 3 adjacents cities and be practically "given"away to "entrepening developers" that make huge profits by selling box homes in such prestine area.
Do i need to say more ???

74135 My conclusions are the following: (1) It was probably not a suicide. (2) This should be investigated much, much further. (2) Rove's involvement, although it shouldn't be ruled out, shouldn't be assumed.

The rationale for my conclusions are as follows:

The comment about jumping from the top floor is wrong. You don't have to jump from the top floor to die. You can jump from about 6 feet onto your head and possibly die. Anyone who has a death wish can almost certainly die by jumping from as low as the 3rd story, so there's no justification to think he would not jump from the 9th floor "'cause he didn't think it was high enough." Baloney.

Next: Paul Sanford did not display any anxiety or depression. Further, he didn't owe anyone huge sums of money. He wasn't wanted by the mob. He didn't have any reason to throw his life away. He had a stable marriage, children, a prosperous career, good health, and importantly, had no addiction problems. Usually, after a suicide, you get a few friends of the victim saying "well, he did seem a little depressed, or "I should have seen it coming" or "he did seem odd the last few months." None of that.

Third, I would agree with the previous post-er that the time and date of his death are significant. If he were to kill himself, why would he drive an hour away on Christmas Eve to do it?

Finally, we should keep in mind that there have been many, many
instances of fould play in the past regarding "accidents" such as these, and suicides of high-profile people such as he should always be doubly investigated.

The problem: if it was indeed murder, the guys reponsible probably covered it up very well, so we'll need either Columbo or Mrs. King for this one.

And the assailant need not be related to Mr. Rove. I'm sure, as an attorney, that he had other enemies, and THAT person would love to see all this misdirected investigation at Mr. Rove.

14344 I realize it has been a few weeks since anyone has responded to this topic, and I must admit I am glad the subject seems to have been dropped. As a member of Paul Sanford's family it has been a very difficult month, and I speak for my entire extended family when I say this. If you are making all of these assumptions based on the articles that said he was "happy" and "involved in so much" and quoted his friends and associates, I must say you are jumping to conclusions. It makes me very angry to read this, and makes me disappointed in the conspiracy machine that you couldn't come up with anything better than this. Understand this: You didn't know him. You haven't heard anything from his family for a reason. No one in the family was willing to comment on the situation because we accepted the suicide. If you knew his history and his psychological state for much of his life, you would accept it as we do.

Please, think about the people you are making these theories about as actual human beings whose lives aren't an open book to all those who read a few newspaper articles. He had a family who loved him, and we would like to not have to hear your half-baked, uninformed theories that he was murdered for his beliefs and actions.

76178 dear anonymous family member:

thank you for posting this message.
i was also angered to read these "conspiracy theories".

i didn't know paul, but a friend of mine knew him well.

my significant other suffers from an often-times debilitating depression
and none of our family or friends really know the severity of her illness.

it is unfathomable to me why or how someone could be so quick to
formulate these so-called "conspiracy theories" about a person they didn't
even know.

from the bottom of my heart--- take care.

"There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods.
