SCIENTISTS have devised a way to cram a good night’s kip into THREE HOURS. They have created a machine placed above the head like a “cap” that puts wearers in deep sleep. It could mean we all might one day wake up refreshed after just a few hours in the sack. The “power nap” treatment quickly puts people into a deep slumber by sending magnetic impulses into the skull to slow brain waves to their lowest level. The process is called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Professor Guilio Tononi, who led the research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, said: “Creating slow waves on demand could some day lead to treatments for insomnia. It could also lead to a magnetically-stimulated ‘power nap’ which might confer the benefit of eight hours sleep in just a few hours.” He said deep sleep treatment can improve people’s moods and ability to learn — and boost memory by allowing connections between brain cells to relax. |
