Some Items on Bin Laden's Death

I got a lot of polite e-mails from people who adhere to the theory that bin Laden died in 2001. Many people are approaching this controversy earnestly in a scientific manner. I searched for further evidence, and I share here the limited results. I expect there are more results that will be uncovered with further digging.

The year 2001 is often said to be the time when bin Laden died. The year 2011 is the main other choice. I think a stronger case can be made that he did not die in 2001, although the government-supplied evidence we have from 2011 is extraordinarily incomplete and unsatisfactory as I made very clear at the time. The 2001 theory relies heavily on a single report that came out of a Pakistan newspaper in late 2001. That’s evidence, as are some other reports supportive of the 2001 theory. There is, however, other evidence that any theory of his 2001 death must grapple with. What items of interest are there in the intervening years that may have to be explained by the theory that 2001 was when he died? Here is a sample, not a complete inventory.

On Sept. 27, 2004, Pakistan’s President Musharraf made some comments reported here. See also here.

“On a visit to The Hague in the Netherlands Monday, Pervez Musharraf told reporters that interrogations of captured al Qaeda operatives and technological evidence indicate bin Laden is alive.

“But when asked about bin Laden’s current whereabouts, Musharraf replied: ‘Oh no, I don’t know where he is. I wish I did,’ according to The Associated Press.

“Lt. Gen. David Barno, commander of U.S-led coalition forces in Afghanistan, told Reuters news agency that top al Qaeda leaders, including bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, were more likely to be in Pakistan than Afghanistan.”

Barno elaborated some here.

Here are some tapes dated 2006.
