A Maricopa County attorney called a Vietnam veteran a domestic “enemy” last week during a public debate over marijuana legalization in Arizona.

The video, featured by online news site The Free Thought Project, shows local resident and war veteran Don Ream questioning Maricopa County attorney Bill Montgomery over his derogatory use of the term “pot heads” when referring to medical marijuana patients.

“Mr. Montgomery thank you for your service. I am a Vietnam veteran myself…” Ream begins. “With all due respect sir, your name calling, ‘pot heads,’ it offends me…”

After explaining his personal story regarding medical marijuana, which allowed him to quit all pharmaceutical medications, Ream politely offered Montgomery a chance to join him for a seminar on the benefits of medicinal cannabis.

"We'll educate you. I feel sorry for you," Ream told Montgomery. "You've been deceived."

Attempting to appear somewhat supportive of medical marijuana, Montgomery responded by claiming that there is a distinct difference between medicinal and recreational marijuana use.

After admitting to recreational use as well, Ream was seemingly shocked by Montgomery’s followup.

"Well, then you're violating the law and I have no respect for you," Montgomery said. Montgomery went even further, asserting that Ream’s military service was somehow negated due to his use of the plant.

"I have no respect for someone who would try to claim that you served this country and took an oath to uphold the Constitution and protect against all enemies foreign and domestic -- because you're an enemy," Montgomery astoundingly claimed.

The audience immediately responded to Montgomery by booing, equally as stunned by the lawyer’s comments.

After the incident, Montgomery canceled a debate scheduled for Monday after his spokesman claimed that he had been “mischaracterized” for his statements.

Montgomery also stated on Twitter that people did not have the right to question how he challenged a fellow vet.

“It’s a veteran thing you don’t understand,” Montgomery said.
