Video has been released showing a Madison, Alabama police officer partially paralyzing an elderly Indian man for the crime of being "suspicious" while taking a morning walk. 57-year-old Sureshbhai Patel, who does not speak English, had come to America to help his son and his wife take care of their new 17-month-old baby boy. A neighbor called police on Patel while he was taking his regular morning walk saying he looked suspicious. After police stopped him for questioning, despite committing no crime, officer Eric Parker of the Madison police department felt it appropriate to carry out a violent takedown on the elderly gentlemen, injuring Patel's spine and leaving him partially paralyzed in the process. Police Chief Larry Muncey apologized for the officer's actions and recommended the officer be terminated. WAAY TV reports the officer has been charged with third-degree assault. "I sincerely apologize to Mr. Patel, Mr. Patel's family and our community," Muncey said. Patel is facing no charges. Despite all of Patel's limbs being initially paralyzed, he managed to regain control in all of them except his right leg. Patel is suing the Madison police for excessive force. |
